Scioto: Page, Morgan Jr. claim meet titles

Conrad Photo Virgil Morgan Jr. has now won a remarkable 27 straight training titles at Scioto Downs

It took until just four races from the end of the meet, but Chris Page was crowned king of the drivers on Saturday (Sept 18) at Eldorado Scioto Downs.

Going into Saturday, Brett Miller had a five win advantage over Page. However, with Miller off his drives due to feeling ill, it was Page's race to lose, and he was on fire, winning six of his 14 drives. The winning drive that put him on top was in the 11th race with Do Work Son. Fittingly, it was for Page's major account, trainer Ron Burke.

Virgil Morgan Jr. locked up his 27th straight training title at the south Columbus, Ohio, oval. Morgan had 99 wins in 404 starts this season. Ron Burke was second with 80 wins.

In 96 race cards, the Scioto meet handle was up 112 percent over 2019 numbers. A high definition signal was introduced, along with free program pages on the Scioto Downs website for each live racing program.

"We put a lot of effort into the backside for the 2021 racing season, including resurfacing the track with Dan Coon," said Jason Roth, director of racing. "We had a lot of good horses on this track and many track records were broken. We're already planning for 2022 and are excited for next year."

Multiple new track records were set, including:

- Hotshot Temptress (2FP) 1:51 2/5

- Heart of Chewbacca (3CP) 1:48 4/5

- Coral Reef Hanover (4MP) 1:49 1/5

- Caviar Gold (2CT) 1:55 2/5

- Gabbys Bit Coin (2GT) 1:54 4/5

- Herculisa (3FT) 1:52

- Winning Ticket (3GT) 1:53 1/5

- Mission Accepted (AH) 1:52

Major events that solidified the exceptional 2021 meet were the $135,000 Charlie Hill Memorial Trot, won by It's Academic in 1:52 3/5 for Yannick Gingras/Ron Burke; the $100,000 #SendItIn Intivational, won by Workin Ona Mystery in 1:49 1/5 for Ronnie Wrenn Jr./Brian Brown, and the $135,000 Jim Ewart Memorial, won by Ocean Rock in 1:52 3/5 for Dan Noble/Christi Noble.

Scioto also hosted the second annual Next Generation for 2-year-olds, at $150,000 for each of the four divisions, over the 4th of July weekend, the Ohio State Fair races the first weekend in August, and the Ohio Sires Stakes Veterans Championships on September 11.
