Scioto: Over $1 million up for grabs for Ohio-sired horses on Saturday

webmaster|Jul 02, 2025

Saturday (July 5) will be a large card for Ohio-sired horses, with purses topping $1 million for the in-state horses competing at Eldorado Scioto Downs.

Headlining the card are three $150,000 divisions of the Next Generation races for 2-year-old filly trotters, colt and gelding trotters and colt and gelding pacers. The races go off as numbers 10, 11 and 13 and will be featured on NYRA's Day at the Races broadcast on Fox Sports 2, which will run from 8-11 p.m. (EDT)

"We always welcome the opportunity to be on Fox," said Scioto's Director of Racing Jason Roth. "To showcase some of our best Ohio-sired horses, along with the up-and-coming 2-year-olds, will create a great show for the viewers. Jenna (Otten, Scioto's on-air commentator) will do a great job hosting and providing content not only for handicappers but potential new fans we'll be reaching."

Also featured on the Fox broadcast will be three divisions of Ohio Sires Stakes action - two races for the 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers and one test for the 3-year-old pacing fillies.

Swingtown, last year's Next Generation winner, who last raced in the North America Cup, will leave from post nine in race eight for trainer Ron Burke. He is coupled with stablemates Fear The Hate, who is undefeated this season with six wins, and Harrisburg Heist as the even money favorite. Race 12 includes Rick Wink, a perfect three-for-three on the season, and Sippinonsearoc. Fan favorite Extra Suds, the pinto, is also in the second division for 3-year-old male pacers. A field of seven filly pacers will close out the Fox broadcast, with the James Ehrsam trainee Rose Run Aimee installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite.

All told on the Saturday card, there will be eight divisions of Ohio Sires Stakes going for $520,000; three divisions of the Next Generation racing for $450,000; and two overnights full of Ohio-sired 2-year-olds going for $49,000, bringing the total for Ohio-sired horses on the evening to $1.019 million.

The undercard of the stellar evening will see a full field of nine in the $30,000 Open Pace. Racing Rebel, the winner of last week's open event in 1:48 4/5, leaves from the rail and is installed as the slight 5-2 favorite over Lou Hill, who comes in from Oak Grove, and Celtic Spirit N.

Leading up to the Saturday Scioto card is racing on Thursday with a first post of 5:45 p.m. (EDT) and a 4th of July card with a special post time of 3:15 p.m. (EDT)

The 90-day 2025 Eldorado Scioto Downs race meet runs through Saturday, September 13. Races are held Tuesday-Saturday with a 5:45 p.m. (EDT) first post. A special late first post of 6:45 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, September 12 will help accommodate horsemen attending the Ohio Selected Yearling Sale. More information about racing at Scioto can be found on the Eldorado Scioto Downs website.
