Charlie May went down the road to win his $60,700 Ohio State Fair event for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers on Saturday night at Scioto Downs. It was his second straight win in the Buckeye State since being placed out of the win in the Meadowlands Pace a month ago. Driven by Brett Miller, Charlie May got away with opening-half fractions of just 27 2/5 and 57 3/5, but he had to pick up the tempo when Heart Of Chewbacca (Dan Noble) attacked first-over from fifth after the half and quickly advanced into second. Charlie May complied, stepping to three-quarters in 1:25 2/5, putting Heart Of Chewbacca in the pocket on the last turn, and keeping him at bay through the stretch to tally by a length and a quarter in 1:51 4/5. Cyclone Union Jack (Ryan Stahl) was third. A McArdle gelding trained by Steve Carter for owner-breeder Don Tiger, this was Charlie May's 11th win in 20 career starts. He has now earned $578,477 and returned $2.20 to win. Miller also won the other $60,000 flight for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers with Odds On Shaggy in 1:51 4/5. He raced in the pocket behind Hardt At Work (Mike Micallef) through fractions of 27 1/5, 55 4/5, and 1:23 4/5, took command in the passing lane in th stretch, and won by a length and a quarter over Borntobeshameless (Noble). Hardt At Work faded to third. Virgil Morgan trains Odds On Shaggy, a Racing Hill colt, for owner Odds On Racing. Odds On Shaggy, who didn't race as a 2-year-old, has a record of 5-2-1 this season and has pocketed $74,905. He took over the top spot past the 27 3/5 opening quarter, and after a 57 4/5 half and a 1:26 2/5 three-quarters, he came home in 28 3/5 to win by three-parts of a length over Lockbox (Chris Page). Peter's Royalty (Josh Sutton) was placed third. A Triumphant Caviar gelding, Winning Ticket is owned by trainer Chris Beaver in partnership with Steven Zeehandelar, Tim Homan, and Jim Burnett. He is a 12-time winner overall from 16 efforts, has put away $259,547, and returned $2.10 to win. Dontforgetlittlman (Noble) was victorious in 1:56 2/5 back in the opening $57,000 division for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters. He took the lead away from Ilikedecupcakes (Hugh Beatty) after the 29 2/5 first quarter, clicked off a 59 second half and a 1:27 3/5 three-quarters, and cruised home in 28 4/5 to triumph by three lengths. Ilikedecupcakes held second over Lucky Pelican (Tyler Smith). Deb Swartz owns and trains the winning Dontyouforgetit gelding. He made his 12th appearance in the winner's circle, has stashed away $141,826, and paid $3.40 to win. Rookie pacing males were also in action in a couple of $73,000 Ohio State Fair clashes. Gulf Shores (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) cut panels of 28 1/5, 57, and 1:25 in the first one of those, and a 27 second final quarter got him to the finish line a length and a half ahead of Sling Shock (Noble) in 1:52. Shane Falco (Miller) came in third. Gulf Shores, from the first crop of Downbytheseaside and out of the Dragon Again mare Western Drag, is trained by Brian Brown for owners Country Club Acres Inc., Diamond Creek Racing, and Wingfield Brothers LLC. Gulf Shores, who is now three-for-three with $76,500 earned, was bred by Joe Sbrocco, Joe McLead, and William Walters and sold for $100,000 at the 2020 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale. He returned $3.20 to win. Merriman guided Western Ready to a 1:52 1/5 decision in the other test for the freshmen. Western Ready tucked into fifth from post eight before the 27 1/5 opening quarter, began a first-over move before the 56 1/5 half, took command prior to the 1:23 2/5 three-quarters, and kept clear in the final panel to win by two lengths over Tre Cruz (Brett Miller). Seaside Jet (Tyler Smith) got third. Western Ready is a Western Vintage-My My Marie gelding. He is trained by Scott Ferguson for owner Brendan Toops, was bred by Mahlon Miller, and cost just $3,200 at last year's Blooded Horse Sale. He has a record of 4-0-1 from six tries, has a bankroll of $57,464, and paid $3.20 to win.
