Sciacca has solid pair for Big Apple Showcase Day

Barbara D. Livingston Saratoga Snacks and jockey Joel Rosario prevail by three-quarters of a length Saturday in the Empire Classic.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Gary Sciacca looks well armed to have a big Memorial Day when he runs Saratoga Snacks in the $200,000 Commentator Stakes and Wincoma in the $125,000 Mike Lee Stakes.

The Commentator and Mike Lee are two of six stakes on Big Apple Showcase Day, a 10-race card entirely devoted to New York-breds at Belmont Park.

Saratoga Snacks, who won the 2013 Empire Classic on the fall version of this program, drew post 5 and will take on six rivals, including Readtheprospectus, the 2013 Commentator winner, and his entrymate, Bond Vigilante. With only six betting interests, the Commentator will go as race 3 (2:22 p.m.)

In the Mike Lee, Wincoma steps up into stakes company off a 3 1/4-length allowance win going 6 1/2 furlongs May 9. He’ll take on eight rivals, including the stakes winner Good Luck Gus and Ostrolenka.

Familiar foes Kharafa, Lubash, and King Kreesa head a field of nine entered in the $125,000 Kingston Stakes for New York-bred males on turf.

Mah Jong Maddnes will seek a repeat victory in the $125,000 Mount Vernon Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares on turf, where she will meet seven rivals.

John Morrison trains Mah Jong Maddnes. He also will try to win the $200,000 Critical Eye Stakes with Saythreehailmary’s, the recent winner of an open-company allowance over Belmont’s main track. She will take on nine rivals, including Hot Stones, the runner-up in last year’s Critical Eye, and the multiple stakes winner Miss Da Point.

Lakeside Sunset, Quezon, The Lewis Dinner, and Temper Mint Patty head a field of 10 3-year-old fillies entered in the $125,000 Bouwerie Stakes at seven furlongs.
