Scholarship drawings at Delta Downs, Evangeline Downs

There will be drawings for college scholarships during upcoming Louisiana-bred programs at Delta Downs and Evangeline Downs. The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association will award two scholarships, each worth $1,000, during the Louisiana Legends card of stakes July 2 at Evangeline. The Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association will award two scholarships, each worth $1,000, during the $690,295 Lee Berwick Futurity card July 9 at Delta. The LQHBA also will donate $5,000 to Special Olympics Louisiana.

◗ Jockey Steve Bourque entered Wednesday night’s card at Evangeline Downs just 10 wins from Thoroughbred victory No. 4,000, according to a notice from Equibase. Gerard Melancon hit a milestone of 4,500 career Thoroughbred wins June 9 at the track.

◗ Jarred Journet’s first win as a rider came June 16 at Evangeline.

◗ Phil Leckinger has been elected president of the Texas Thoroughbred Association.
