Scholar Athlete's accomplishments stand out in Sunday allowance.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Sunday’s $47,000 allowance feature is carded at 1 1/8 miles on the turf and drew a field of eight led by Scholar Athlete, who is eligible for the race by virtue of the $35,000 optional-claiming conditions. He’s one of two horses in the field who’ll run for that tag along with Basha.
Scholar Athlete is a seven-time winner, the most recent of those victories coming under similar conditions Aug. 9 at Colonial Downs. The well-travelled gelding, who has raced at Woodbine, Presque Isle Downs, Belmont Park, and Colonial this season, is coming off an even fourth-place finish against a strong group of mid-level starter-allowance foes on Oct. 2 at Belmont.
Alien Invasion will look to rebound from a fifth-place finish as the odds-on favorite at Gulfstream Park West. Prior to that effort, Alien Invasion had won 4 of 5 starts, with his lone setback during that span coming by a neck against $10,000 claimers here last summer.
Basha has paired career-best Beyer Speed Figures of 85 in his last two starts and also is a key contender, along with Carom and the stakes-placed 3-year-old Lahinch.
◗ The new meet began, appropriately enough, with a victory by the Todd Pletcher-trained Quick Enough on Friday. Quick Enough, got some much-needed class relief in the $25,000 maiden turf test, dropping out of maiden special weight company. He also benefitted from a perfectly judged ride by Jairo Rendon, who rated the even-money favorite off a hotly contested pace before they slipped up the rail and drew away to an easy win.
Pletcher relinquished the Championship meet training title to Jorge Navarro earlier this year after an unprecedented 15-year reign.
