Savings Account headed to sales ring at Keeneland
Savings Account and Kathballu, who were dominant stakes winners on the Delta Downs Jackpot undercard Nov. 19, have contrasting plans over the next few months.
Savings Account won the $200,000 Treasure Chest at Delta. Craig Bernick, who co-owns the 5-year-old mare with Heider Family Stables, said she is scheduled to be sold at the January sale at Keeneland. Savings Account won six races at six different tracks for the partnership.
“She was very consistent,” Bernick said. “She ran against good horses, stayed sound, and was lucky enough to win some nice races. She was a fun horse to be associated with.”
Bernick noted that in addition to Delta, Savings Account won races at Parx, Fair Grounds, Del Mar, Keeneland, and Hollywood Park. In another highlight, she was third to Beholder in the Grade 1 Zenyatta in 2015 at Santa Anita.
Bernick said Savings Account was the first horse he owned together with the Heiders. The partners have since bought a number of horses together.
“We purchased her at Keeneland as a yearling, so we’ve had her for her whole racing career,” Bernick said.
Savings Account is a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro and was trained by Tom Proctor.
Kathballu romped by eight lengths in the $75,000 Orleans at Delta. She is scheduled to run in the $50,000 Pan Zareta on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Down the road, Kathballu will come under consideration for the $125,000 American Beauty on Jan. 28 at Oaklawn, said trainer Ken McPeek. Kathballu races for Five D Thoroughbreds.
