Sauterne nabs first Group 1 win in Prix du Moulin de Longchamp

Marcus Hersh|Sep 04, 2023

Sauterne won her first Group 1 as odds-on favorite Big Rock came up second-best for the third race in a row in Prix du Moulin de Longchamp on Sunday.

Second in the French Derby and second again in the Group 1 Jacques le Marois, Big Rock broke somewhat poorly before taking the lead in the one-mile Moulin, but Sauterne stalked intently from second around the long Longchamp turn and easily collared Big Rock in the final furlong when asked for her best by jockey Tony Piccone.

Sauterne debuted last November, raced over the winter, and has continued campaigning through the spring and summer, yet still showed up with a career-best Sunday. Third in the French 1000 Guineas and Prix Rothschild and second in the Prix Jean Prat, all Group 1s, Sauterne broke through at the top level Sunday while getting a four-pound sex allowance from the runner-up. Sauterne won by one length with the older horse Facteur Cheval a closing third, a half-length behind Big Rock.

Sauterne, a homebred owned by Jean-Pierre Dubois and trained by Patrice Cottier, is by Kingman out of Saliocorne, by Aragorn. She’s expected to make her next start in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret over seven furlongs.

Zagrey takes Grosser Preis Von Baden

In Germany on Sunday, odds-on favorite Zagrey overcame a tough trip to win the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden by a neck over Mr. Hollywood.

Mr. Hollywood set a walking tempo and Zagrey encountered traffic in the homestretch, jockey Christophe Soumillon only finding room when Mr. Hollywood came off the rail in the final furlong of the 1 1/2-mile contest. Four-year-old Zagrey conceded seven pounds to 3-year-old Mr. Hollywood while validating favoritism earned through a second-place finish to Westover in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and a third behind the mighty Equinox and Westover in the Sheema Classic at Meydan.

Zagrey races next in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Torquator Tasso won this race in 2021 before capturing the Arc.
