* At Louisiana Downs, Grand Bank made his stakes debut a winner, wearing down pacesetter Rodeo's Castle to take the Island Whirl Stakes. That Tat was third.

* At Santa Rosa, Penny Ante ($13) withstood a strong challenge from 2-5 shot Pickle in the lane, winning the $60,750 Luther Burbank Handicap in the first turf stakes race ever run at the Sonoma County Fair.

* At Emerald Downs, Karis Makaw stretched her win streak to three with a three-quarter-length victory over Canadian invader Summer Symphony in the $40,000 Boeing Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles.

* At Los Alamitos, Be a Bono ($3.40), the reigning Quarter Horse of the Year, successfully defended his title in a stakes named after his 93-year-old owner, winning in the $153,514 Spencer Childers Handicap.
