Saturday stakes recaps (6/7/03)

DRF Staff|Jun 09, 2003

Other Saturday stakes

* Golden Ticket ($9.40), claimed for $20,000 last August at Del Mar, stepped up in class and romped to a 10 1/4-length victory in the $100,000, 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup Handicap at Philadelphia Park. Golden Ticket's time of 2:31.61 was .61 of a second off the 11-year-old track record for the distance. It was the seventh win in 12 starts at the meet for trainer Cliff Sise Jr. since he brought a small string of horses from Southern California.

* Racing at Delaware Park for the first time since he won the R.R.M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial Handicap last July, Bowman's Band ($8.60) outlasted 7-5 favorite Private Lap by a neck to capture the $100,000 Brandywine Handicap.

* Pickupspeed ($12) held off Acrolect by a neck to win the $100,000 Jennings Handicap at Pimlico. Ryan Fogelsonger picked up the mount for trainer Larry Murray after P Day was scratched.

* Docent ($2.80) held off a late charge from X Country to hang on for a head victory in the $76,700 Slipton Fell Handicap at Mountaineer Park. Ridden by Rodrigo Madrigal Jr. for trainer Tim Ritchey, the 5-year-old Docent is now 3 for 3 at Mountaineer, all in stakes races.

* Built Up ($8) overcame early trouble and a wide trip to outgame 4-5 favorite Lord Abounding by a nose in the $75,000 Ponche Handicap at Calder.

* Two weeks after winning an off-the-turf stakes, Native Heir ($4.20) did it again when he went wire to wire to capture the $50,000 Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park.

* Wildwood Royal ($19.60) sprinted clear early and led throughout in the one-mile, $50,000 Panthers Stakes at Prairie Meadows.

* Scarlet's Tara ($3.20) took control soon after the start under leading rider C. J. Woodley and cruised to an 8 3/4-length victory in the $35,000 Frank "Buddy" Abadie Memorial Stakes for Louisiana-bred 3-year-old fillies at Evangeline Downs.
