Saturday stakes recaps (6/26/04)

* Sharky's Review ($3.40), the 2003 Iowa-bred horse of the year, captured the $70,000 Hawkeyes Handicap for a second straight year when she rallied for a two-length victory under jockey Perry Compton in the 1 1/16-mile race for Iowa-bred fillies and mares at Prairie Meadows.

* Vazandar ($16.20), a Kissoon Thoroughbreds homebred, became the first statebred to win an open company stakes at Canterbury Park since Courtly Kathy won the Hoist the Flag Stakes in 1998. Vazandar drew off by two lengths in the $50,000 Come Summer Stakes for 3-year-old colts.

* Fleeta Dif ($19.20) overtook 3-5 favorite Leslie's Love for a half-length win in the $50,000 Miller Lite Stakes, shifted from the turf to the sloppy main track at Lone Star Park.

* Mt. Carson ($3.20), a two-time stakes winner on dirt but unraced on grass, romped to a seven-length victory when the $50,000 Da Hoss was moved from the turf to the main track at Colonial Downs.

* Britt's Jules ($15), making his first start for trainer Eric Guillot, drew off through the stretch to capture the $50,000 Excalibur Stakes, shifted from the turf to the main track at Louisiana Downs, by almost seven lengths.

* Chicago shipper Punch Bag ($6.20), winless since his lone trip to Fairmount Park last fall in the Buckpasser Stakes, easily defeated favored Chipotle in the $30,000 Roman Colonel Stakes at Fairmount.

* New York invader Flamenco ($3.40) led throughout his stakes debut at Woodbine in the $139,875 Victoria, a five-furlong dash for 2-year-olds.

* Calends ($5), claimed for $25,000 in April, won his second straight start for trainer John Zimmerman when he scored a wire-to-wire five-length victory in the $25,481 Alison McClay Memorial for older sprinters at Penn National.

* Metts Reward ($17.40) got the early jump on the rest of the field and cruised to a 10 1/2-length victory over the 3-5 favorite, Cassanova Kid, in the $12,813 State Derby at Lincoln.
