Satin Gold gets first stakes win in Ricks Memorial

Satin Gold gave Dewey Smith his first stakes win as a trainer Friday night, when she rallied for a one-length win over Lady Haddassah in the $50,000 Ricks Memorial at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. It was another neck back to Sandsarita in third.
Satin Gold ($15) settled in fourth along the rail in the one-mile turf race for fillies and mares, as Zuni Women was clear through an opening quarter in 23.81 seconds and the half-mile in 48.38. Satin Gold rode the rail around the final turn, came between rivals in the stretch, and finished with good energy to cover the distance on firm ground in 1:37.46.

Smith is a former jockey who primarily rode Quarter Horses, with his first win as a rider coming in 1980. Overall, he won 498 races from 4,732 mounts, according to Daily Racing Form records. Smith’s mounts earned $3.7 million. His first win as a trainer came at Lone Star Park in May 2013. Smith is a former assistant to the late Ralph Arnold Jr., who previously trained Satin Gold.
Satin Gold picked up her first stakes win in the Ricks, earning $30,000. She has won 5 of 17 starts and $143,470. Satin Gold is a 4-year-old daughter of English Channel. Her dam, Bright Gold, was a five-time stakes winner who earned almost $500,000. Satin Gold was bred in Kentucky by Hazel Marsh.
