Sarge wins first stakes in Steve Prather

Sarge became a stakes winner in his two-turn debut Monday, when he darted to a 2 1/2-length victory over Pub in the $50,000 Steve Prather at Zia Park.
The race run at one mile and 70 yards was for 2-year-olds bred in New Mexico.
Sarge ($3.60) came into the Steve Prather off a runner-up finish in the New Mexico Cup Juvenile on Nov. 11 at Zia. He was content to stalk the pace Monday, as Stormin Texason took the field through an opening quarter in 24.63 seconds and a half-mile in 47.69. Sarge moved to the fore after six furlongs in 1:12.57 and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:43.98.
