Santos, Miami Herald settle suit

The Miami Herald reported Tuesday that it has reached a settlement in a libel lawsuit filed against the paper by jockey Jose Santos in 2005.

The suit accused the newspaper of falsely reporting that Santos had carried an unauthorized object in his hand during his victory aboard Funny Cide in the 2003 Kentucky Derby. The stewards at Churchill Downs later ruled that Santos was holding only his whip during the race.

"On behalf of my client, I'd like to say we've settled the lawsuit, and both parties are satisfied with the result," said Sandy Bohrer, the lawyer representing the Miami Herald.

No details of the settlement were released. Attempts to reach Santos for comment proved unsuccessful.
