Santa Rosa: Clare's Top Choice takes Cavonnier

Clare's Top Choice ($15) went from maiden to stakes winner on Sunday, making an overpowering move on the turn to win the $65,650 Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes at the Sonoma County Fair.

Clare's Top Choice broke sharply and dueled with Making Dreams down the backstretch before opening up on the turn under jockey Saul Arias. He had a four-length lead at the eighth pole and cruised home from there. Danger rallied from last to finish second, 1 1/2 lengths back, with odds-on Lightning Diablo third, another three-quarters of a length back. Clare's Top Choice, a 2-year-old trained by Jeff Bonde, covered six furlongs in 1:11.41.

A son of Old Topper who was a $5,000 Barretts January 2007 purchase by George and Mary Clare Schmitt, Clare's Top Choice earned $40,800 to lift his career earnings to $58,060.
