Santa Anita: Sheza Smoke Show could get shot at Providencia
Consecutive wins by Sheza Smoke Show has led trainer Peter Eurton to plan a stakes for the 3-year-old filly in April.
Friday, Sheza Smoke Show ($8.80) won an allowance race over a mile on turf by a half-length over Loan Savant. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Sheza Smoke Show was timed in 1:35.17. She beat maidens on the hillside turf course on Jan. 4.
“She keeps doing everything right,” Eurton said. “I’d like to space her races and put some weight on her.”
Sheza Smoke Show, by Wilko, could start in the $150,000 Providencia Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies on April 5.
8-year-old wins maiden race
It’s never too late to win a race.
The 8-year-old gelding Thermal Wave won a maiden race on the hillside turf course in Friday’s fifth race, his first start since October 2011. Ridden by Joe Talamo, who had three winners on Friday, Thermal Wave rallied on the rail in the stretch to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Mr Lemon Tree.
“We knew he was a nice horse, but I thought he’d need one,” said winning trainer Don Warren. “After two years on the ranch, he was carrying a lot of weight. I had a lot of long, slow works in him.”
Thermal Wave was sidelined by “a variety of different things,” Warren said. Thermal Wave has made seven starts, beginning in 2010.
Sherman fined $1,000
Trainer Art Sherman was fined $1,000 by track stewards on Friday after two of his horses scheduled to run that day each was given two doses of phenylbutazone, necessitating late scratches.
Billy Win, entered for the fourth race, and Matzoh Ball Magic, entered in the eighth race, were withdrawn on Friday morning. According to steward Kim Sawyer, Billy Win and Matzoh Ball Magic were given phenylbutazone before they left Sherman’s stable at Hollywood Park and again after they arrived at Santa Anita.
