Santa Anita: Shared Belief resumes exercising after quarter crack

ARCADIA, Calif. – Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, resumed light exercise over the weekend after missing almost a month of training because of a quarter crack.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Shared Belief jogged at Santa Anita on Saturday and Sunday. A patch was placed on Shared Belief’s right front foot earlier in the week. Hollendorfer postponed Shared Belief’s return to the racetrack from Friday to Saturday because of wet conditions Friday morning from a rainstorm Thursday.
“He’ll jog the next few days, and we’ll start galloping,” Hollendorfer said Sunday . “We’ll see where we are with him.”
Hollendorfer said he does not have any race goals for Shared Belief, who was unbeaten in three starts as a 2-year-old.
“It will depend on how he comes along and how much we lost in training,” he said.
The next two major stakes for 3-year-olds around two turns at Santa Anita are the $300,000 San Felipe Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on March 8 and the $1 million Santa Anita Derby over 1 1/8 miles on April 5.
“If you run around here, you have to be ready,” Hollendorfer said.
In late January, Hollendorfer said he was thinking of Shared Belief’s 3-year-old campaign as “more than the Kentucky Derby. There are a lot of races for this horse, plenty of races to run in, no matter what time of year it is.”

Shared Belief has earned $451,200. He won the $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on Dec. 14, finishing 5 3/4 lengths in front of Candy Boy. On Saturday, Candy Boy won the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, a prep for the Santa Anita Derby.
