Santa Anita: Premier Pegasus resumes light training

Steve Andersen|Sep 30, 2011

Premier Pegasus, the winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in March, has been cleared to resume racetrack training after being given a five-month break for a hairline fracture of the cannon bone in his left foreleg.

Maria Ayala, the assistant trainer to Myung Kwon Cho, said Premier Pegasus will begin jogging soon for an expected comeback this winter.
Owned by Cho, Premier Pegasus was the morning-line favorite for the Santa Anita Derby in April when the injury was detected.

Cho’s horse Riveting Reason is nearing a comeback after being turned out in March with a hoof injury. He could start in coming weeks, Ayala said. Last year, Riveting Reason was third in two Grade 1 races – the Del Mar Futurity and Norfolk Stakes – before an eighth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Kevlar Kid recuperating
Kevlar Kid, second in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in July, has been turned out after undergoing surgery to have a bone chip removed from an ankle, trainer Carla Gaines said.

The injury was detected after Kevlar Kid finished fifth in the Windy Sands Handicap at Del Mar on Sept. 3. Kevlar Kid is expected to be out of training for three months with the expectation he can resume racing next spring, Gaines said.

Rosario, Gomez ride at Keeneland
Jockeys Joel Rosario and Garrett Gomez will ride at Keeneland next weekend, with Gomez spending next Friday through Sunday at the Kentucky track and Rosario riding there on Saturday.

According to his agent, Tony Matos, Gomez will ride at Keeneland from Friday through Sunday, ride at Santa Anita on Oct. 10 and then return to Keeneland from Oct. 12-14. Gomez is booked to ride most of the major stakes at Keeneland next weekend, including Theyskens’ Theory in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes next Saturday.

Rosario, the leading rider at the Del Mar meeting this summer, will ride I’ll Have Another in the Breeders’ Futurity, Sidney’s Candy in the Shadwell Mile and Switch in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes, all next Saturday.
