Santa Anita: Pontchatrain gets first stakes win in Unzip Me

ARCADIA, Calif. – Pontchatrain got her first stakes win in Saturday’s Unzip Me Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita, giving Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens his fourth win of the 11-race program and his third in a stakes.

Pontchatrain ($13) kicked clear of 11 rivals in the final furlong, winning by three lengths over 50-1 Tribal Spy. Warren’s Venada was third.

Pontchatrain ran about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:11.86.

Earlier in the day, Stevens won the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes on Beholder and the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes on Mucho Macho Man.

Owned by Glen Hill Farm and trained by Tom Proctor, Pontchatrain has won 3 of 5 starts. She finished fourth in the Sandy Blue Handicap for 3-year-old fillies on turf in her stakes debut Aug. 16. Ponchatrain was purchased for $200,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale.
