Santa Anita

Santa Anita: Picks and analysis for mandatory-payout pick six on March 4, 2023

Michael Hammersly|Mar 02, 2023
Proxy
Barbara D. Livingston Proxy will try to be closer to the pace in Saturday's Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap.

RACE 7: CASH EQUITY (#6) has been knocking heads with some of the best turf horses on the circuit, so Saturday’s drop helps. CARMELITA’S MAN (#2) was troubled in a stakes here Jan. 7 off a layoff and then a good second at this level here Feb. 5. (2)

RACE 8: SNAPP DADDY (#9) showed more early interest in his second start here Feb. 4. He’s headed the right way. VINNY THE COIN (#5) showed speed in first two starts versus more expensive. The drop helps. STOP AND A TRES (#10) has been knocking on the door with three straight seconds and may be ready to bust through. (3)

RACE 9: LADY JAE (#8) has been facing some of the best turf-sprinting gals on the circuit and can benefit from the drop. CARMEN MIRANDA (#4) continues her sharp form. HONEY JAR (#6) used too much fuel early routing here Jan. 28 and got nailed late. She’s back to sprinting, which helps. (3)

RACE 10: NEXT REVOLT (#6) failed to catch HIGH HEATER (#8) when they met here Jan. 29. Next Revolt was claimed and at this shorter trip can turn the tables. High Heater figures tough again while he cuts back to one turn. He’s 2 for 3 going seven furlongs. (2)

RACE 11: HONG KONG HARRY (#6) is the top turf miler out West. AIR FORCE RED (#4) just failed to last in the Grade 3 Thunder Road. He’s the speed of the speed and will take some catching. (2)

RACE 12: PROXY (#11) has shown top ability when on his game. He was too far back early in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup. DEFUNDED (#5) pressed the issue and stayed on well to be second in the Pegasus to a big winner. He was a sharp second in the Grade 1 Gold Cup here last spring at this trip. HOPPER (#8) appears to be the speed of the speed and could take some catching. NEWGRANGE (#3) gamely won the Grade 2 San Pasqual at nine furlongs here Jan. 28, and the way he kept to it says Saturday’s added ground is within his reach. (4)

THE PLAY: 2, 6 / 5, 9, 10 / 4, 6, 8 / 6, 8 / 4, 6 / 3, 5, 8, 11 = $57.60 ticket
