Santa Anita

Santa Anita: Picks and analysis for mandatory-payout pick six on Feb. 5, 2023

Michael Hammersly|Feb 03, 2023
Dicey Mo Chara wins San Gabriel at SA Dec 26 2022
Benoit Photo Dicey Mo Chara wins the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.

RACE 4: LOYAL TO A FAULT (#1) tried stakes foes last time out and found those waters too deep. SMOOVE AS SILK (#2) comes off a string of decent turf miles. She adds blinkers and moves to sprinting. SMILING AMY (#4) was a good third in a race like this here Oct. 10. (3)

RACE 5: VIOLENT RUNNER (#3) found Grade 3 waters too deep last time out here Dec. 31. She won her four prior starts, so she’s shown talent and this drop may be key. ARDIS (#5) looked good blasting $12,500 foes here Jan. 6. She was claimed and gets an encouraging multiple-level class hike. MISS FIA (#4) comes off a solid second versus $32K foes here Jan. 6. That was her first start in a while, so she can improve. (3)

RACE 6: THE GREY WIZARD (#9) was a sharp second in a longer Grade 2 on Nov. 25 at Del Mar and then whipped allowance foes here at this trip Jan. 20. DICEY MO CHARA (#7) got back on track with a game win in a Grade 2 here Dec. 26. PRINCE ABAMA (#3) fits on his best form. SAY THE WORD (#8) hasn’t run in more than a year but has plenty of back class. (4)

RACE 7: HOPKINS (#2) is at his best sprinting. If you toss that Grade 2 San Antonio try (a route), you’re left with nothing but sharp sprints. RADICAL RIGHT (#5) invades with sharp form. (2)

RACE 8: AUGUSTA MELODY (#3) has speed and has done some of his best work on turf. DEGREE OF RISK (#7) has been going longer the past 18 months or so while often facing stakes types. He’s better situated here. DOITFORANDREW (#5) rallied smartly to be third in a race like this here Dec. 31. That was his first start in eight-plus months, so he can improve. VIRAT (#4) comes off three straight strong turf sprints. (4)

RACE 9: SCRIPT (#9) had excuses in his last pair. The distance cutback may play better for him. EXAULTED (#3) looked good beating lesser here Jan. 2, his first turf try. Could be he’s found his footing. (2)

THE PLAY: 1, 2, 4 / 3, 4, 5 / 3, 7, 8, 9 / 2, 5 / 3, 4, 5, 7 / 3, 9 = $115.20 ticket
