Santa Anita: Pick six to start with $162,000 carryover

Steve Andersen|Feb 20, 2012

ARCADIA, Calif. - The pick six pool on Monday at Santa Anita is expected to exceed $800,000 with interest spurred by a one-day carryover of $162,429 from Sunday.

Monday’s pick six covers the fourth through ninth races on a program that begins at 12:30 p.m. Pacific. The first pick six race is the fourth, an optional claimer over 1 1/2 miles on turf, with a post time of 2:03 Pacific. The first race offers a short-priced favorite in Imponente Purse, who will be a single selection on many tickets.

Imponente Purse, the winner of the Grade 3 Sunset Handicap last summer, starts for a $40,000 claiming price a month after finishing fifth in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes. A 6-year-old gelding, Imponente Purse is the 7-5 favorite on the morning line, and is likely to be the shortest price in the pick six races.

There are solid field sizes throughout the pick six races. The fourth race has seven entrants, followed by fields of 8, 9, 9, 10, and 14.
There was one scratch as of 10 a.m. on Monday. In the sixth race, Bellagio Road, a 9-2 chance on the morning-line, has been withdrawn.

The eighth race, the $150,000 Buena Vista Handicap, has 11 entrants, but Secret Cove is on the also-eligible list. She remained in the field as of 10 a.m. on Monday morning, but will be withdrawn at noon if the 10 fillies and mares in the body of the race stay in the field.
The Buena Vista field is led by the multiple stakes winners Cambina and Vamo a Galupiar. Cambina has not started since finishing eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last November. Vamo a Galupiar won the Megahertz Stakes last month.
