Santa Anita notes: She's a Tiger stretches legs

Steve Andersen|Feb 23, 2014
She's a Tiger
Barbara D. Livingston She's a Tiger, with Gary Stevens aboard, works a half-mile in 48.45 seconds Sunday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – She’s a Tiger, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2013, worked three furlongs in 38 seconds Saturday, her first workout of the year.

“It was virtually a gallop,” trainer Jeff Bonde said. “She did it pretty effortlessly.”

Bonde said a decision on She’s a Tiger’s first start of 2014 has yet to be made, but the $400,000 Santa Anita Oaks over 1 1/16 miles on April 5 is a possibility.

“It depends on how she does between now and then,” Bonde said. “We need to get some more works in her.”

She’s a Tiger has won 3 of 6 starts and earned $725,650. She won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante last August and was second in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes here last September. She’s a Tiger finished first in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies here in November but was disqualified and placed second behind Ria Antonia for causing interference in the final strides.

Hollendorfer has two for Santa Ysabel

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer plans to have two starters in the $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Saturday in Artemis and Swiss Lake Yodeler. The Grade 3 Santa Ysabel is run over 1 1/16 miles.

Artemis was fifth in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes, her stakes debut, on Feb. 1. Swiss Lake Yodeler won the Soviet Problem Stakes for California-bred fillies at Hollywood Park in December but was 11th as the 3-1 favorite in the California Cup Oaks on turf here Jan. 25.

Hollendorfer said that nominees Cast in Silver and Taste Like Candy will skip the race. Cast in Silver beat maidens in her debut over six furlongs at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 16. She is a half-sister to Palace Malice, the winner of the 2013 Belmont Stakes.

“She has a license to be a good horse,” Hollendorfer said. “In the back of my mind, I’d like to think she’s a [Kentucky] Oaks filly.”

Taste Like Candy was fourth in the Las Virgenes. Hollendorfer said he is a “little more guarded” about Taste Like Candy’s prospects for the Kentucky Oaks.

• Jockey Omar Berrio has been suspended for three days for causing interference in the second race Saturday. Berrio, who was cited for his ride on It Is Living Water in a one-mile maiden race on turf, was suspended March 1, 2, and 6. It Is Living Water finished fourth in a field of eight. Berrio was cited for causing interference shortly after the start. There was no change to the order of finish.
