Santa Anita notes: Cyclometer to California Cup Sprint
ARCADIA, Calif. - Cyclometer, winner of the Midnight Lute Stakes on Jan. 4, will start in the $125,000 California Cup Sprint over six furlongs Jan. 25, according to Karen Headley, assistant trainer to her father, Bruce.
Cyclometer won his first stakes in the Midnight Lute over six furlongs. A 6-year-old horse by Cyclotron, Cyclometer has won 5 of 17 starts and earned $330,254.
The Jan. 25 program will include Electric Eddie, who runs in the $250,000 California Cup Derby for statebreds over 1 1/16 miles.
Trained by Ben Cecil, Electric Eddie finished first in a maiden race Jan. 2, but was disqualified and placed second for causing interference in the stretch. As a 2-year-old in 2013, Electric Eddie was second in two stakes – the Golden State Juvenile Stakes at Santa Anita and the Real Quiet Stakes at Hollywood Park.
New agent for Maldonado
Edwin Maldonado, who tied for the riding title with Rafael Bejarano at the 2013 spring-summer meeting at Hollywood Park, has switched agents. Effective Friday, Maldonado was being represented by Jim Pegram. He was previously represented by Vic Lipton.
Through Thursday, Maldonado had four wins from 28 mounts at the winter-spring meeting. He had two winners Thursday, including Power Foot in the seventh race.
Power Foot won an optional claimer over 1 1/4 miles on turf.
A 5-year-old horse by Powerscourt, Power Foot ($7.20) closed on the inside in the final furlong to outfinish 3-5 Monastic. Powerfoot races for Stepaside Farm. In 2012, Power Foot was fourth in a division of the Oceanside Stakes and the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby.
Trainer Richard Mandella said that Power Foot could start in the $200,000 San Marcos Stakes over 1 1/4 miles on turf Feb. 8.
