Santa Anita: Mamma Kimbo won’t run in Friday allowance

Trainer Bob Baffert said he will not start the impressive maiden race winner Mamma Kimbo in an allowance race on Friday at Santa Anita after she sustained a cut on her head earlier this week in an apparent stall accident.

Baffert said the cause of the minor injury was not known.

“I had to stitch her up,” he said. “She cut it on something. She’ll be all right, but we had to treat her.”

Mamma Kimbo won a six-furlong maiden race by 5 1/4 lengths in 1:07.94 on Feb. 18, her career debut for owner Peachtree Stable.

With her absence, the allowance race will have four runners, and is led by Sister Moon, who was second as the 1-5 favorite in the minor Anoakia Stakes for 2-year-olds fillies last October. Trained by John Sadler for breeders Jerry and Ann Moss, Sister Moon has not started since that race.

“She got a little sick on us,” Sadler said. “We didn’t send her out but we took her over to Hollywood Park and built her back up.”

Sister Moon won her debut by 9 3/4 lengths in a maiden race over 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar last summer. She broke slowly in the Anoakia Stakes and finished second to Ismene, who returned to win the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes for statebred fillies last December.

“She didn’t get out the second time,” Sadler said of Sister Moon.

“She’s very, very good. The form has held up, too.”

The other fillies in Friday’s allowance race are the British import Hidden Passion, Woebegon, unplaced in three stakes last summer and fall; and Vukovar, unplaced in two stakes at Saratoga and Monmouth Park last summer.

Vukovar has not started since September and needs a race, trainer Eric Guillot said.

“I’d prefer to have three or four more works,” Guillot said. “She’s quick. We’ll go out there and wing it and we’ll see how far she can go [on Friday].”
