Santa Anita: Indianapolis impresses in San Pedro Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Indianapolis is perfect after two starts following a sharp win in Monday’s $75,460 San Pedro Stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Indianapolis ($3.20) won the six-furlong San Pedro by 4 1/4 lengths over 5-2 Papa Turf, finishing in 1:08.80. Garcia had Indianapolis behind pacesetter Rockin Home for the first quarter-mile, took the lead on the turn, and pulled away in the stretch.
“That was like a morning workout,” Garcia said while leaving the winner’s circle.
Papa Turf finished 2 3/4 lengths in front of Beach Hut, who was well clear of Rockin Home. Only four ran. Elmonte Cristo was scratched.
Indianapolis beat maidens in his debut at Hollywood Park on Nov. 24. Winning trainer Bob Baffert said Indianapolis will make his next start around two turns but said he does not have a race in mind.
“We thought we’d run him in this sprint stakes and then stretch him out,” Baffert said. “He’s fast.”
Indianapolis, by Medgalia d’Oro, races for Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith. The colt was purchased for $490,000 at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale.
