Santa Anita horses to watch: Week of March 22
CRUSHER
Trainer: Bob Hess Jr.
Last race: March 14, 6th
Finish: 4th by 1 1/2
Beyer: 63
A premature move at the three-eighths pole sealed the fate of this $12,500 restricted claiming horse. His rider pulled the trigger early, and the horse lost ground through the far turn and flattened out. Hess claimed him from Doug O’Neill.
BOSQUE ANGEL
Trainer: Bruce Headley
Last race: March 14, 8th
Finish: 1st by 6 1/4
Beyer: 69
This maiden-20 showed surprising speed second out, cleared, set realistic fractions, and romped. Owned, bred, and trained by Headley, she can show up next at just about any level, from bottom claiming to starter allowance.
MARGOT MACHANCE
Trainer: Leonard Powell
Last race: March 15, 6th
Finish: 1st by 3/4
Beyer: 76
This filly scored an impressive maiden victory in her U.S. debut. She lost ground much of the trip, blazed home in 22 seconds and change, and could be any type. She has stakes potential.
ROOKIE SENSATION
Trainer: John Shirreffs
Last race: March 15, 8th
Finish: 2nd by a head
Beyer: 96
A Grade 2 turf winner last fall, he was tons best in his allowance-race comeback. Blocked and buried inside, he got clear too late and galloped out like a beast. Next stop: graded stakes.
