Santa Anita horses to watch: Week of March 15
ON THE BACKSTREETS
Trainer: Peter Miller
Last race: March 8, 6th
Finish: 4th by 1 1/2
Beyer: 81
One mile around two turns was too far for this good filly sprinter who faded in the final furlong. She previously won two grass sprints and can return to form shortening up.
SUGGESTIVE BOY
Trainer: Ron McAnally
Last race: March 8, 8th
Finish: 3rd by 1 1/4
Beyer: 102
This top turf miler ran as well as pacesetting winner Winning Prize in this Grade 1. A closer, Suggestive Boy was compromised by the race shape, five wide into the lane, finished with run. This was an excellent effort.
WILL TAKE CHARGE
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Last race: March 8, 9th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/4
Beyer: 113
Shipping in, closer to the pace than usual, and facing a horse-for-course that had a pace advantage, Will Take Charge affirmed his rep as one of the country’s top horses while eight clear of third in the Big Cap. He is a potential standout April 12 in the Oaklawn Handicap.
STORM FIGHTER
Trainer: Bruce Headley
Last race: March 8, 10th
Finish: 5th by 4 1/4
Beyer: 81
First start in 11 months and racing above his conditions, this sprinter stuck in there to the furlong pole before tiring. He can be long gone dropping into a statebred N1X.
WARRENS TRICIA R
Trainer: Jorge Gutierrez
Last race: March 6, 6th
Finish: 5th by 10
Beyer: 37
This California-bred first-time starter trained like she needed a start going in and ran accordingly chasing a fast pace. Expect major improvement second time out.
