Santa Anita horses to watch: Week of Jan. 25
GANGNAM GUY
Trainer: Mike Machowsky
Last race: Jan. 16, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 3/4
Beyer: 88
Gelded since his last start, this California-bred 3-year-old ran super in a turf allowance against open company. He chased the hot pace, opened up, and got collared in a career-best race.
DAY OF FURY
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Jan. 17, 6th
Finish: 6th by 6 3/4
Beyer: 62
Favored in his career debut, this 3-year-old colt raced greenly throughout. He was climbing and never comfortable. He trained like a good one going in and is worth following.
LITTLE CURLIN
Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer
Last race: Jan. 18, 6th
Finish: 3rd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 68
Making his first start in California, this maiden son of Curlin was blocked through the lane while probably best. Bred to run long, this was a good comeback by the 3-year-old.
BEVERLY THE BOSS
Trainer: Peter Miller
Last race: Jan. 19, 6th
Finish: 3rd by 3 3/4
Beyer: 70
Adding blinkers for her second start, this 3-year-old maiden filly set blazing fractions and weakened late. Good try by daughter of Street Boss who is sitting on a maiden win.
YANA
Trainer: Bill Spawr
Last race: Jan. 20, 7th
Finish: 7th by 8 1/4
Beyer: 42
A front-runner, this California-bred maiden filly lost her chance when she broke dead last. The whole debacle can be disregarded. She fits in a similar statebred maiden race.
