Santa Anita has $141K carryover

Steve Andersen|Jan 18, 2009

ARCADIA, Calif. - The Monday program at Santa Anita features a pick six carryover of $141,431.

The nine-race program begins at 12:30 p.m., with two stakes included in the pick six races the $70,000 San Pedro Stakes for 3-year-olds sprinters and the $150,000 San Marcos Stakes for older horses over 1 1/4 miles on turf.

The pick six covers the fourth through ninth races, with four sprints and two races on turf.

There were two scratches as of Sunday morning Delmando and Bartok s Magic have been withdrawn from the ninth race, a maiden claimer over seven furlongs. Hurley s Way, who starts from the outside in that field of 10 is a top contender along with Rise Above.

Overall, the pick six races feature decent-sized fields. There are 12 runners in the fourth race, a seven-furlong maiden claimer. Six Pack Man and Larrylarrylarry are the leading contenders.

Hype, a well-regarded 3-year-old trained by Todd Pletcher, will be favored in the fifth race, an optional claimer over a mile on turf. There will be support for Miguel s Mascot, who like Hype has stakes experience.

The sixth race is a seven-furlong claimer for older horses. The race lacks a standout, but Be Realistic and Held Up will feature on many tickets.

Flashmans Papers, the winner of the Eddie Logan Stakes on turf in December, will be favored in the San Pedro Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs. Ventana, who has fared poorly in stakes at a mile or farther, may be suited to this sprint.

Trainer Neil Drysdale has a formidable trio in the Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes Artiste Royal, Marsh Side, and Obrigado. Artiste Royal is the 3-1 morning-line favorite, an indication of the open nature of the race.
