Santa Anita: DRF Plus handicapping report for October 4, 2013

Vulnerable FavoriteSHAND (#3, 2-1) figures the one to beat with the class drop from straight maiden to this level ($40K) but remember he made a similar class move at DMR July 26 and could manage only 4th that day. In his defense, he had a troubled start and may be better on dirt as well, but getting behind him means taking the shortest price he’s ever been with no margin for error. -Michael Hammersly

Spot PlayThe 2-year-old BEHIND THE BOSSMAN (#1, 2-1) was claimed by Jeff Mullins from a third in a maiden-40 that turned out “live.” The 2-4 finishers returned to win; the winner returned to finish second. ’BOSSMAN can improve first start for top trainer. - Brad Free

Spot PlayRounding into form, RUN SOPHIA RUN (#9, 4-1) ran well chasing a fast pace vs. maiden at BSR. That third-place finish was her first off the claim by Mark Glatt; she meets a California-bred maiden field that does not appear too tough. -By Brad Free

Spot PlaySWISS HEART She’s bred to be quick, had a bullet 5fs at Del Mar, & one guesses all those moderate 6fs drill have her fit enough for debut, & that the speed will come back out. Not a lot to this Cal-bred maiden-special. - Marcus Hersh |
