Spot PlayViolating the sacred “don’t pick 1sters on the rail” edict; rules were made to be broken. PAPA SMITTY (#1, 5-1) Has only worked on synthetic but bred better for dirt, which he gets in debut, & suspect he’ll be quick enough to get position at start, key going 5.5fs. $4.7K auction buy in for almost 7X that price, a plus.- Marcus Hersh Closer Looks >> |

TRIBE (#1, 4-1) may not at first look like a turf horse with his 5-0-0-1 record on grass but a closer look says otherwise. He’s actually run pretty darn well on turf, rallying for 3rd on the hill Feb. 18 and to be a close-up 4th on this course at this trip and level April 5. He was then gone almost 5 months and came back to be a respectable 4th in a grass sprint at DMR Aug. 29. He can benefit from that run, there’s no panicky drop, may enjoy this longer trip and has worked strongly since. It may also be telling that Espinoza rode trainer Gaines other entrant in this race (Turn on the Pumps) in his last 2 starts but ends up on this guy instead. -Michael Hammersly
