Santa Anita: DRF Plus handicapping report for March 28, 2014
Race 1 |
Spot PlayFastest in the field, back on preferred footing and drawn outside vs. modest foes, six-start maiden SCARLY CHARLY (#5, 5-2) might never get a better chance vs. special-weight sprinters. He looks like a standout. -Brad Free

Vulnerable FavoriteSTILL UNBROKEN (#3, 5-2) comes off a sharp 2nd here Feb. 28 at this level, but that also came routing and on a wet-fast track. We’re not routing today and he may not get that footing again. At least he has won sprinting but he still comes here with no Beyer Speed Figure edge and in fact was a well-beaten 3rd (by 6 lengths) in a race just like this here Feb. 7. -Michael Hammersly

Spot PlayCAUSEITHERTZ (#7, 4-1) looked like a potential grass stakes horse in 2012 and early last year but after a so-so 5th at BHP last May 2 he wasn’t seen again for over 10 months. When he resurfaced here he did so for a tag ($40K, same as today) which was worrisome as they don’t give anything away out here. But he ran credibly to be 4th and with that under his belt and the move to this longer trip (that return run was a sprint, the ideal tightener) and NO further class drop he can stalk the pace and prove best when it counts. -Michael Hammersly

Spot PlayD’OBSESSION (#3, 4-1), gelded prior to his last start, shortens to six furlongs and might be better from slightly off the pace. Upset chance first off the claim by Dean Pederson. -Brad Free
