Vulnerable FavoriteSOI PHET (#2, 9-5) opens as the ML favorite after having run against some tough stakes foes, including coming out of the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham here May 24. Trouble is, the drop almost certainly keeps the price depressed on a horse who’s yet to hit the board in 5 prior grass starts and who under the conditions of this race as the 129-pound highweight is giving away significant poundage (7-20 pounds) to some horses who consider this footing their specialty. -Michael Hammersly

Spot PlayUNUSUAL HEATWAVE (#5, 12-1) showed signs of returning to form when third in his latest in his second start of a layoff; now makes his third start of his current form cycle – which can often be a peak race for a horse – and he has the back numbers to suggest he can be a force in this Cal-bred turf stake. Byron King
Spot PlayETHNIC DANCE (#8, 5-2) hasn’t been seen since Sept. 1 but the colt still has a lot going for him. Tactically he may the controlling speed here. But he’s no need-the-lead type either as he’s run well from off the pace should someone else outgun him early. It’s also no small matter he’s 3 for 4 on turf so the surface suits. This half-brother to top-class Twirling Candy (Grade 1 winner on dirt, Grade 2 winner on turf) followed in his brother’s footsteps as like ‘Candy he won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on turf (run in divisions) so he has ample class. That was his last start and it’s been flattered (3 he beat that day came right back to win). It’s been a quiet meet for Sadler but this guy can boost his numbers, and a string of good works says he’s ready off the bench. -Michael Hammersly
