Race 1 Irish Presence She tried blinkers last out but will remove the equipment for this race and note both of her wins came without the hood; exits quick-paced race and note the runner-up from it returned in her next start to take a $32K claimer at Dmr, with a Beyer Figure of 91; suspect this one can be closer to the pace here than she was last time, as she is stretching out to two turns. Black Witch She shows a strong series of five furlong moves for what will be her first out since July; has been known to fire fresh in the past, winning her maiden off the bench back in March; also has seen quality rivals like Beholder, and brings tactical speed to the table; contender. Playful Humor She's a half-sister to Marsh Side, a multiple Grade 1 winner of $2.3mm; both are from the Grade 2-winning mare Colonial Play ($244K); was a winner at this distance last out and while she now must face more experienced rivals, like that she is a consistent sort set to make her third start since June. What a Spot She's a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Coil ($1.1mm); tried two turns for the first time last out and put up her best career Beyer Figure; the race came on the grass and she now moves to the main track and note her maiden win came on dirt at SA; runner of interest. Melanistic She's appealing for the fact that she's a nine-time winner facing some less experienced rivals; she also makes a couple of key moves; she's getting back to the mile and a sixteenth distance of her last win and she's returning to the main track at SA, where she is 3-for-6; can share. Blonde Fog She established her class last year when second in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet; makes first start since and while it's tough to expect any horse to deliver in their first out in 10 months, she's appealing for her class and the fact that she won in her debut...by more than 12 lengths at this same mile and a sixteenth distance at SA; further, she's working sharply for barn that does well with its comebackers; win candidate. Race 2 Silver Hustler Proven fresh, this miss may be a bit on the fragile side as the races have been spaced; tough beat in this league in June and she may have just not wanted to go a mile and three eighths last time; love the spacing of the comeback drills as Stevens strings along; the rider rode Miss Well Molded also for just the second time here on Wednesday and he won with her at 3-1. Changethechannel Shorter trip could work to her advantage today and she obviously needed the last effort; she has more speed than she flashed in last and she may have to clear Rock and Glory to clear here; respect. Wittgenstein (IRE) Fully extended, but she won the last time in allowance company; she faced a good one last time as Beholder returned to cash in the Grade 1 Zenyatta with a 106 Beyer; should be right there with the A game. Little Emily Mare ended 2012 with a win at this level; she tried to defend her title in the Madrinas last time but just never kicked; one major concern: she has lost ground in the drive in 7 of the 8 races this year. Rock and Glory Homebred has been patiently placed; love the spacing of the drills and miss can give you a :45 and change half if in the mood; would expect her to be on the muscle fresh; barn has spotted them great all year; look for Garcia to send and try to steal it. Warren's Veneda Miss was right there at the top of the lane, just could not carry on with the momentum down the hill; off poorly in 3 of last 4 and that must be addressed; 5 clear in the tough beat at FPX two back; figures to give a very good account of herself. Race 3 Smoove It Game maiden win at BHP June 29; after all, she dueled, looked beat in midstretch but rerallied to win well; still, it's a tad worrisome she hasn't been seen since; the good news, though, is she's worked well of late (particularly that :59.20 bullet here Oct. 2) and it's very nice to see a sharp guy like O'Neill picked a tough spot like this for her return. Spring Moon CAme out smokin' at DMR July 21; didn't just beat maidens that day but she whipped 'em, and that included stablemate Fascinating, who ran 3rd and since was 2nd in the G1 DMR Debutante and 3rd in the G1 Chandelier; it's a tad worrisome she didn't run again at DMR, as she seemed a good candidate for the 2yo filly program there but at least she's worked strongly for this; kin to Sway Away (3-time G2 SP). E Equalsmcsquared Scratched out of what surely was an easier spot here last week; good enough to be 2nd in the Landaluce at BHP so she's got some quality, and while that was on synthetic notice a bit win on LS dirt May 18; tried turf and a route at DMR Sept. 2 and while that didn't go well she may be better playing this game and it's nice Kruljac scratched her from that seemingly easier spot last weekend to go here (surely a tougher spot) instead. Bajan They thought enough of her after that game maiden win at DMR Aug. 10 (not 2-time G1 SP Fascinating was 3rd) to then try the G1 DMR Debutante; OK, so that didn't go so well but she's been freshened and there's no huge panicky drop by Callaghan; worked well since, too. Cadron Came out firing to gamely win her debut at DMR July 25; that being said, it's a tad disconcerting she hasn't been seen since, passing both the G2 Sorrento and G1 DMR Debutante; at least she shows up for a good race like this, with some nice works since, though note Garcia, who was up for that debut win, ends up on Baffert's other runner (Spring Moon) instead, though of course it's never a bad things to get Bejarano on your side; but geez her winning Beyer sure came back light, didn't it (56)? Race 4 Elusive Luci Maiden tries both winners and the lawn for the initial time in this spot; she does have pretty sharp early foot but there is other lick signed on for this; sire gets just 8% first turf winners from his offspring and the dam was winless, but she did drop G1 SP, 217K earner Stormy Lucy who won first time on the green. Spacecoast Fresh filly tries the hill for the first time in her return from nearly 8 months on the shelf; she does have sharp tactical foot which can help her secure a good spot early but her sire gets just 5% first time surface winners from his offspring and the dam was 0 for 10 over the footing prior to dropping one foal who tried the green and was 0 for 2 on it. Friends With Macy Recent Fariplex grad goes firt time on the green for an outfit that does ok with this type; sire is just 3 for 125 with his initial surface runners and the unraced dam's other foal was 0 for 2 on the green; just watching her first time with winners. Marina Del Heat She's another last out maiden winner trying the lawn for the first time in this spot; expecting she'll have a little extra to offer late at this shorter trip, but the barn hasn't had any recent luck moving them to the green for the initial time; 2 of the dam's 3 wins did come over this type of footing and this gal's sire gets nearly 13% winners from his first turfers. Miracle Merger Ninth time proved the charm for her and she needed the move to cheap claimers at Fairplex to get the initial win out of the way; 6 year old tries the hill for the first time here and her sire gets about 9% winners from his first turfers; she's the first foal to race out of a SW dam who never tried the green. Calameera Set a crazy fast clip when stretched out and put on the Del Mar lawn for the initial time and did pretty well to hold second money in her first spin with winners; while this configuration can be tricky she did prove she could handle sprinting and she's had plenty of time to get over the career best Beyer effort; one to consider. Citizen Jane Tries the hill after an ok effort at Fairplex last month and she'll get another new pilot for this one; her sire is 0 for 15 with his first time turfers and she's the first foal to race out of a dam who was winless from 17 sod spins, so don't know that she'll move up much over the new footing. Horsesanddivorces Tired while trying a shorter trip at Del Mar in her return from half a year on the shelf; gray did run well until backing out of it late as the chalk over the course in the winter and she's been on a regular work pattern for her return from the short break for an outfit that's profitable first time back; contender. Joeandbetty'sbaby Field's most experience turfer gets Bejarano for her first crack off the claim by an outfit that does excellent work with this type; late runner fired a good one off a similar break 2 back and she did break her maiden over the course earlier in the year; while this will be her first start against older it looks as if they'll have to hold her off to win. Race 5 India's Song Best recent workout was on 9/28: her sire won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and 1.31 million (offsping of Unbridled's Song have won 113 out of 836 debuts); the dam won a G3 and 630K; there are no winning siblings to mention. Contrasting This beginner hails from multiple G2 type Distorted Humor who amassed 769K and whose progeny have won 119 out of 725 initial starts; the dam won 4 of 7 and 147K; sib to 22K earner Frozen Four. Coco Noir Descendants of Orientate, Breeders' Cup Sprint winner who notched 1.71 million, are 53 for 455 as far as winning their first attempt; the dam went zero for 2; there are no winning siblings to mention. Dublin Dancer Her sire won a Group 1 and 340K (descendants of Thewayyouare are zero for 8 in debuts); the dam never raced; this is her only foal to make it to the starting gate; shows only modest work tab. Wild Caroline Made up solid ground in the final furlong of her first run; her sire won a G1 sprint and 424K; the dam won 1 of 16 appearances and 17K; amonog the winning sibs is 137K bankroller Peachy Kiss. Costamar Adds blinkers after staying within range of a quick pace first time out; her sire twice won the Breeders' Cup Classic and 6.42 million; the dam won 1 of 7 and 29K; sib to 53K earner Distant Strike; worked today's distance, a distinct plus. Salsita Stretches out today following that wide first journey; her sire won a G2 and 1.1 million; the dam was without a tally in 11 attempts; among the winning siblings is 56K earner Inagotable. London Frog New face in this crowd was sired by multiple G1 victor Afleet Alex who captured 2.76 million (his descendants have won 29 out of 295 initial races); the mom won 1 of 12 and 21K: winning siblings include 255K earner Harmonizer. Saintly Joan Did not recover from a slow getaway first time out; her sire won a couple of G2s and 626K; the dam won 1 of 15 and 24K; winning siblings include 203K earner Iotapa who was G1 stakes-placed. Blunderstone She was sired by multiple G1 winner Birdstone who earned a total of 1.57 million (his descendants have won 9 percent of their first tries); the dam never made it to the races; winning siblings include 74K earner Murky. Race 6 Divine Tale More than an 8-month absence after a middle-moving debut; the show and 9th-place finishers from last posted 77-58 Beyer speed figures in next-out SA-75K-maiden claiming and GG-$12,500-maiden claiming wins; wish the worktab sparkled more for this. Majestic Minister Raced this short just once in career so figures to need this one off the long layoff and longer distances down the road; defeated the 5th and 7th-place finishers from last who Beyered 76-67 in next-out SA-75K-maiden claiming and GG-MSW wins. Woodys Wharf Just 1 race in career going this short was a 10th-place finish; clearly going long on turf has been her best game; the cutback in distance is a major issue; reunites with the 2-back Beyer Top rider which is a plus One Time Only Sire is 50-for-430 with 1st-turf runners; 229K-earning SW dam did not race on grass; 1 foal went 0-for-1 on the green; the winner from last repeated in an IND-optional claimer with a 76 Beyer; has been working forwardly off the 41-day absence. Cravin' the Heat Back to the place and distance of her March career-best Beyer; worked on dirt like she's ready to fire a big race somewhere and now back on her preferred surface all leads to lots of upside off the dull-dirt form. Lil Swiss Echo The winner from last repeated in a BHP-optional claimer with a 75 Beyer; defeated the 7th-place finisher who took a BHP-MSW event next out with a 71 speed figure; 2-for-28 long-layoff trainer since 2012 does not add to the appeal. Indygo F M A Debut 9th-place finish was the last time she raced this short of a distance; the dirt workout does not inspire hope however the new rider yields 34% winners since 2012 for the trainer; broke poorly in last but usually is primed stalking a route; 3-straight times beaten favorite seeks to make amends. Legacy Another absentee working well coming off a career-best Beyer; late runner may have issues getting up in time at 6.5F to win it all; the debut winner repeated in a BHP-optional claimer with a 76 Beyer; encountered wide trips in first trio with a rider change for this. Tres Osos Sire is 41-for-421 with 1st-turf runners; 100-for-706 with 1st-time starters; is the 1st foal out of an 0-for-3 dam (1K) (0-for-1 turf); the 9%-winning debut barn and moderate worktab for this suggests we take a wait and see approach. Lake Maracaibo Go back to April, 2012, to see her field-best Beyer on SA grass at today's distance; the 2-back show runner graduated next out with an 85 Beyer in a BHP-MSW event; was primed for this now back at her best game on the downhill course. Moon Ride Sire is 21-for-219 with 1st-turf runners; is the 1st foal from the dam won 2-of-11 on the grass (105K); not fond of runners regressing 2nd-time out; the runner-up finisher from last Beyered 84 in her next-out SA-MSW win. Switched Up Trailed thoughout at longer while the dirt workouts do not suggest a massive improvement is on the way; cuts back in distance but would need a massive and dramatic 2nd-time out improvement to make any impact here. Miss Charming Sire is 36-for-341 with 1st-turf runners; is out of a 2-for-8 grass dam (130K); 7 of 9 foals to race on turf are grass winners including 1.6M-turfer Tour Charmant (7-for-20); know this speedster early but unsure about late. Dreamy Blues Sire is 5-for-39 with 1st-turf runners; 8-for-87 with 1st-time starters; is out of a 2-for-10 dam (44K) who did not race on turf producing 2 winners from 4 other foals to race including G2-SW Shawklit Mint (10-for-29, 464K); no foals raced on turf. Race 8 Journey On Full sister to stakes winner Bella Viagga (4-7, 249k, including 2 of 3 turf starts for 133k) has absolutely dominated in her two most recent starts and this looks like an ideal spot for her to try to make it three straight wins; Pedroza has won with 10 of 25 (40%) mounts for this barn in 2013. Long Legged Lovely She's probably going to need to see a few of these show up with less than their best to have a chance at a solid share of the prize, but she didn't run poorly in her most recent turf start at Del Mar two races back, a race that saw her get nosed out by today's rival Blazen All Star. Van Dien Avenue Half-sister to multiple G1 winner The Usual Q. T. (8-23, $1.5 million, including 8 of 16 turf starts for $1.2 million) has shown a little something in her four turf starts, and even though an improved performance is needed to threaten these in her first attempt against winners, she might still have more to show us. Warren's Rosebud Her form has been solid since being placed over turf at second asking and she figures to be forwardly placed from the break; however, it looks like Maldonado might have opted for Our Pure Creation over this one; going to limit her to a spot underneath in the exotics. Blazen All Star Like to see the steady improvement she's shown from day one and a case can be made for her turf debut in her latest outing being her sharpest performance to date; she has her share of appeal in this spot while showing up for a barn that can be live with a fresh horse. Our Pure Creation Although it was a small field, she made it look easy in her career debut, and she was in tough while stretching out in distance and trying turf for the first time at second asking; like to see Maldonado aboard and have to respect the potential for better that is living here at the moment. Tangerine Tickle Despite a long absence between starts two and three, she's been a model of consistency, and feel that she can take a step forward after gaining useful route experience in her latest outing; her recent workouts look lively and like to see Gryder getting the call for this. Heat Du Jour This miss has a little bit of quality to her pedigree and it certainly looks like the time off between April and July did her some good; it looks like she's trained well the past month and Nakatani seems to know the right buttons to push aboard this filly. Chimi Dee A little concerned by the time off she needed after a sub par performance in her latest outing, but her recent workouts look okay, and she ran well the last time she was entered after a layoff; winner from latest won next out at BHP on 6/13 going 1m over turf vs. 80k OPC's with an 84 Beyer. Tiz a Classy Lass She stepped up with an improved run at second asking to get the job done and she didn't run badly when finishing behind today's rival Krazypapa in her career debut; Ziebarth-homebred is meeting up with winners for the first time, but like to see Leparoux land here and he's won with 6 of 13 (46%) mounts for this barn in 2013. Krazypapaya She's been a pretty consistent performer, and even though it's tough to ignore the presence of Pedroza aboard Journey On, this miss is a little interesting in this spot while wearing blinkers for the first time, especially with a couple of improved looking workouts in tow. Toomanytomatoes Stakes placed veteran is worth keeping an eye out for in the event that she draws in but she'll be the lesser of the two O'Neill-trained fillies in here; neverthless, she merits plenty of respect underneath in the exotics. Secret Cove She's another stakes placed runner who can't be ignored if she draws in and she's making her first start for a barn that does well with new acquisitions; like to see that she's been at her best racing over this turf course in the past. Race 9 Senor Snickers The debut was not all that bad but it's been a disaster since; backers can point to the fact that a sibling banked $118K but that runner needed 38 starts to do it; can't endorse. Dickery Do This is a tough sell as he's never been in the money; he pushed the issue at Pomona but had nothing left when it counted; shades off and her top Beyer without the blinks is 33; that will not get it done today. Destino Colt got rolling too late from the Pomona rail; no speed, no asset and after 24 defeats, it's very hard to find the upside; beaten 6 lengths in the best local start and he didn t scare the winner that day; not my kind of play. Grant Two solid drills since tiring in last; never like to see them give up clear leads and soph has lost ground in the lane in every race except one; place horse in the DMR finale graduated next out for this very price at Pomona with a 75 Beyer; more experienced pilot here; he fits but you kind of get the feeling if he is looked in the eye, he ll blink. Ice Cream Truck The March to August freshening seemed to do her a world of good; in tight 8/11 but he still got rolling late and he just hooked a daylighter in last; those that like her can hang the hat on one sibling that earned over $100K; best of 32 bullet move locked and loaded; look out. St. Valentino When they are off for 13 months, the red flag is obviously raised big and bright; then he gets to lugging in the return at the abbreviated distance; would think long and hard before taking too short a number here. Attempt Wide in the debut and last time, runner is in light but will need plenty of help up front to get it done; could very well slip in for a section today. Kingsbury If you figure he just needed the last, then runner has a shot to move forward; 2nd, 3rd and 12th finishers on 4/20 graduated next out; he has some work to do to match top kin, 3 or 8 racer and over $100K earner Wild Catseye; fit enough to at least work a couple of times since the last out; not without a shot. Warren's Cliff S. Can't fault those that are a bit gun shy after the double chalk flop; the 9/6 place horse graduated next out at this very level here 8 days ago with a 64 Beyer; look for him late if at all. Slight Edge Gelding has been knocking on the door; Del Mar finale was not too bad and he was hung wide in the Pomona opener; 6th finisher in last took a maiden $6500 claimer at ALB next out, place horse was 2nd beaten a nose in a maiden $25K Fresno seller and the winner repeated there in a $40K starter with a 66 Beyer; due to hit pay dirt. Full's Kris S. The extended layoff is a genuine concern and backers got a thrill for about 22 seconds in the return; show horse in last cashed at this level next out and the 4th finisher took a maiden $25K FPX claimer; there is a near $100K earner in the tree; like fact he drilled this far, try to get a good look at him on the track. Spot of Thunder Yet another that was away from the game for an extended period; steadied to kick off the year, wide a couple of times, but that can happen when a runner has limited speed; must hustle. Ancient Stone The May race screams off the canvas but she has not been able to duplicate that effort; last Beyer was her second to worst ever; the hotter the pace the better for this one. Puerto Williams Wonder how high expectations can be for this $1,300 purchase?; boxcars every time, seems to be looking at the same fate.
