Santa Anita: Closer Looks for June 19, 2014

DRF Staff|Jun 18, 2014

Race 1

Haleys Rainbow
Debuts for Walsh who the past five years has a 21 percent strike rate with first-time starting 2-year-olds; Songandaprayer roughly 13 percent with debuting juveniles; dam didn't race and this is her first foal; sharp works at Los Al but the rail could be an issue if she doesn't break sharply.
Caval
This is just the third starter by Breeders' Cup Classic winner Blame and the first two haven't won; dam went 1/3 and earned $19K; 3 of 4 sibs are winners the best being Grade 2 winner Derbaas; Hollendorfer 26 percent with first-time starting juveniles over the past five years; she may have tipped her hand with her sharp 5-furlong move out of the gate here June 14; the pick.
Yes She's a Dancer
Like the way she improved her Beyer Speed Figure in her second start and she ran okay in her debut as well; she is the first foal out of a mare that didn't win her only start; she has an edge in experience but have a feeling some of the first timers are quicker; consider for the exotics.
Partyin
Henny Hughes is an excellent debut sire with 14 percent of his 2-year-olds winning first tim out; the past five years Bonde has a 16 percent strike rate with first-time starting juveniles; dam won her 2-year-old debut; 5 of 6 sibs are winners the best being $115K stakes placed Diosa Indian; bullets fired; contender.
So You Say
Flatter roughtly 11 percent with first-time starting juveniles; dam won 3 races and earned $121K; all 4 sibs are winners the best being $88K Hawk Three O Eight; unusually slow works for a horse coming out of this barn but we all know Baffert can have them ready to roll first time -29 percent with debuting 2-year-olds over the past five years. - Randy Goulding

Race 2

Los Angelenos
Most recent workout was a distinct improvement; his sire won 4 of 11 races and 167K (all victories on the turf); offspring of Bat Mobile are 1 for 17 in debuts; the dam won 1 of 14 and 23K; among the winning siblings is 14K earner Tribal Mobile.
Eleven Zip
Finished midpack in his comeback effort earlier this month but the race itself was above average in quality; should find himself closer to the lead with that tightener under his belt and he switches to Baze who has done extremely well for this barn.
Juliet's Tizzy
Returns to the proper level where he just missed 2 back; did not have a smooth trip when jammed up between rivals in his latest assignment and should be a major factor today; a logical contender but will be a short price on the board.
Antinanco
Failed as the 3 to 2 favorite last time out when unfortunately running into a blowout winner; his sire won a G1 and 633K while the dam won 8 of 47 and 566K; winning siblings include 8K earner Mansion Mayhem; can steal away today.
Sudden Rumor
Worth some trifecta inclusion based on his overall record; tries this 30 grand level for the first time but may have to rally from too far back this afternoon; needs an accelerated early pace in order to earn his first exacta finish.
Jack Diz
Very respectable showing in his maiden voyage of a month ago especially in light of the difficult trip; his sire won 976K including G1 success while the dam won 2 of 8 attempts and 25K; this is her only foal to make it to the races. - Jim Kachulis

Race 3

Perfecta
Like the idea of turning her back in distance for this, but a case can be made for her being at her best at distances even shorter than this 1 1/8m assignment; she deserves to be listed among the contenders, but just wondering if she might lack the needed punch through the final furlong.
Remarkable Moon
When considering the long layoff, her two most recent starts have to be viewed in a favorable light, but still prefer to limit this late running type to a spot underneath in the exotics rather than lean on her for the top spot.
Hey Pretty Girl
She's the only 3-year-old in this race and it does appear that this relatively lightly raced miss is on the improve; she has a live look to her in this spot and she's shown the ability to adapt to any early pace scenario.
Warren's Rosebud
She's one of two in here with more than a single win next to her name and her best effort is strong enough to get the job done in this spot; like the idea of her being ready to give a good account of herself while making her second start back from a layoff.
Another Sky
Two of her four turf starts have been solid performances and the runner up from her latest race returned to win next out here on 5/31 going 1m over turf vs. 50-40k MCL's with a 68 Beyer; that said, this can prove to be a tough spot for her to meet up with winners for the first time.
Scooter Bird
Her lack of early speed has been leaving her with a lot of work to do late in her races, but she's a decent fit at this level of competition, and as long as she can avoid falling too far out of it early on, she can get herself into the mix against these. - Brian Pochman

Race 4

Perfecta
Like the idea of turning her back in distance for this, but a case can be made for her being at her best at distances even shorter than this 1 1/8m assignment; she deserves to be listed among the contenders, but just wondering if she might lack the needed punch through the final furlong.

Race 5

Sun Spots
Statebred steps in with open claimers while giving the hill another shot in this spot; gelding has shown early foot but little stamina and though there's not a whole bunch of early foot signed on for this there isn't a lot to suggest he'll stay much longer today; have to side with others on the win end.
Warrior's Ridge
Earned a solid number while holding third money in his return from the freshening when dropped to this level for the first time; beaten last out chalk was defeated by one of today's foes in that one but he was softened up a little on the front end that day and maybe things are a little easier for him in this one; he's had his chances but it looks like they'll again have him to beat.
Super Reagan
Steps up for his first off the claim by a barn that knows how to place this type; gelding has yet to try the green and his sire gets 12% winners with his initial turf starters but the winless dam was 0 for 2 on the green prior to dropping foals who were a combined 0 for 12 over the stuff.
Superboot (IRE)
Barn's second runner in here earned a field best last out number in his first off their 2 back claim; gelding tracked the front runners in his first crack down the hill and beat one of these for the place spot in that one; maybe he moves forward second time over the course, but his foe may have things more his way this time; contender.
Oscars On Fire
Gelding showed little in 2 starts against cheap claimers on the main track and now he'll give the hill a shot; longshot does get in light with the switch to a bug and his sire has seen one of his 10 runners to try the green win first time over the footing but the dam was winless in her lone turf start and none of her foals tried the stuff; just watching him today.
Aerial Dancer
Gets a new pilot for his first crack for a tag following a couple of hillside tries with straight maidens; gelding returned from his last to work a quick half mile on the Los Al dirt which suggests he'll be more involved from the bell this time and he is kin to a turf winner so he has a right to improve with racing over this surface; thinking he'll prove the main danger on the class relief.
Proud Captive
Debuts for a barn that usually takes its time with runners and the worktab is long of late for his unveiling; his winless dam never tried the green prior to dropping a limited main track sprint winner and this guy's sire gets 11% winners from his overall debut runners and 9% winners from his initial turf starters.
Songforjohnmichael
Fresh gelding makes his first start of the year while stepping on the green to sprint for the initial time; his worked have been better of late but the barn has been on a poor run with its returnees; sire gets 6% winners from his first time turf starters and the dam's other foal to race was winless from 5 tries including 2 off the board efforts on the green; he did run into some good ones in his 2 starts, so the class relief can't hurt. - Steve Grabowski

Race 6

Say's Who
Exits a career-best and best-last-race Beyer speed figure in a race where she raced with front wraps on for the 1st time ever; been a new runner since blinkers came back on for last 2; new rider is 3-for-41 at SA since 2013 for the trainer; view as a pace presence chasing Fly to Freedom and Fast Moka Too.
Little But Lucky
Gets a 1-pound positive weight swing off the under 2-length loss vs. Queen of The Hill; she beat Say's Who in the debut and gets a positive 6-pound weight swing from that one for this; figures to be rallying into the exotics with this group.
Fly to Freedom
Try to catch me; has Fast Moka Too to fend off early then the closers late; latest was a tough beat when nosed on the wire but it marked the 4th straight start off the July, 2012, claim that she's fired well; she's made it known from last pair that she loves this SA dirt track; the pick.
Fast Moka Too
Pace battle with Fly to Freedom looms; raced on the lead in 5 straight starts; the 4th and 6th-place finishers from last Beyered 75-70 in next-out GG-SA-$12,500-claiming wins; reunites with the 2-time win rider and will race with her lightest-weight assignment since since April, 2012; view as a speedy contender for win honors.
Pay the Debt
Negative 4-pound weight swing off the more than 3 length loss vs. Queen of the Hill; the barn's 1-for-14 turf-to-dirt record does not give the indication a huge improvement is on the way; she hasn't fared well in prior 5.5F races the latest was in November.
Queen of the Hill
Cuts back to her shortest-distance test since February, 2012, rallying from far back to graduate in an SA-dirt 40K-maiden claimer; 3-back was a field-best Beyer speed figure where defeating the show finisher who Beyered 68 in a next-out SA-10K-claiming win; exits a race where she beat Pay the Debt at longer and is the one they all have to hold off in deep stretch; the one to beat.
Mahalo Princess
New barn sent her right to turf where she faded; the trainer owns a capable-18%-win rate with turf-to-dirt starters; seems to be shooting high here; in her 3-back win at today's distance she defeated the runner-up finisher who Beyered 59 in a next-out SA-8K-claiming win. - Art Gropper

Race 8

Warrens Goldnugget
Dead last in the only sprint, and with limited speed, the rail is no bargain; wonder if she is a tough racer to handle as this is her 5th new pilot?; look for her late if at all.
Tropical Moon
Apparently not much of a workhorse, she was in a bit tight last time and has arch rival on direct outside to deal with once again; connections would not mind if she starts acting like stakes placed over $100K earner Polysheba; she was troubled in both starts last year; needs a turn around.
Nonna Reese
She doesn't have to be 7th early on this time and probably will not be if she doesn t bobble again; fits in the Beyer department, barn has been rolling, and she is back pretty quickly; respect.
Lady Lois
Not much to go on after a pair of non-efforts; turf only 2 for 29 dam banked nearly $65K; 1 for 14 lone full sis took a route; wonder how high expectations can be for this $1,000 purchase?
Thames Valley
Seldom thrilled to see multiple defeats at Pomona; blinks didn't help much last time and she is speed challenged; needs a total reversal of fortune.
Point Endurance
Homebred has been wide twice and she must be respected on the drop alone; stakes winning 21 for 72 dam earned nearly $250K; all 3 siblings won; one banked nearly $170K and full bro Point Endurance won juvenile debut here in 2008 in a MSW with a 94 Beyer; if she can run at all, this should be the day.
Sheza Eyeopener
Beaten chalk two back with no apparent excuse; would have expected her to show more speed last time but she was just a brief threat; maybe the blinks will help in that area; 5/26 winner repeated in a $40K starter with a 73 Beyer; she has a lot of work to do to match top kin Kissamee Glitter, a near $250K earner; she has been value in the gimmicks in the past and that may be her fate once again.
Run Rosie Run
Miss seems to be figuring it out; she flashed a bit of speed in the May route and was inching toward the winner last time; backers can point to fact there are several multiple race winners in the tree including near $150K earner Senior; bothered early last time, with a clean break, it could be a whole new ballgame.
Do It Mobile Style
Must pick it up after beating just one home but trainer has spotted them just fine with limited starters this year; 1 for 10 dam banked nearly $25K; drawn right today, never easy to debut at 7 furlongs; expect much better effort. - Randy Goulding
