Santa Anita: Closer Looks for April 27, 2014

DRF Staff|Apr 26, 2014

Race 2

Misty'sviewthegold
Sire has won with 1 of 4 of his first-time starters and he's 1-for-10 with his turf starters, and this is the first foal from a dam who won 9 of 30 starts for 68k, including 0-for-1 over turf; a few of his workouts hint at ability.
Aerial Dancer
Sire wins with approximately 11% of his first-time starters and with approximately 13% of his turf starters, and dam won 3 of 10 starts for 17k, and she didn't make a turf start; this gelding is a full to minor stakes winner Spanish Highway (5-44, 196k, including 1 of 5 turf starts for 26k); 50k purchase looks like he's trained well in preparation for his career debut.
Willy Be Wild
Sire wins with approximately 11% of his first-time starters and with approximately 12% of his turf starters, and dam was winless from just one start, and it wasn't a turf start; this colt is a 1/2 to Royal F J (4-56, 379k, including 4 of 45 turf starts for 333k); he has some turf in his pedigree and he attracts Bejarano at first asking.
Mal Verde
Sire has won with 1 of 10 first-time starters and with 1 of 8 (13%) turf starters, and this is the first foal from a multiple stakes placed dam who won 4 of 17 starts for 182k, including 2 of 11 turf starts for 142k; Van Dyke has won with 4 of 13 (31%) mounts for this barn in 2014.
Relative Time
He hasn't made much of an impression since an encouraging career debut but maybe the time off after his latest start can help him; this really isn't a bad spot for him to try to reproduce the effort he showed up with in his career debut.
Sunny Kat
He's by a top turf sire and his dam won one of seven turf starts for 27k, and he's shown enough in his first two starts to merit consideration in this spot; he might appreciate turning back to a sprint distance and this barn can be live with a fresh horse.
La Jolla Cove
Sire wins with approximately 9% of his first-time starters and with approximately 15% of his turf starters, and dam won 2 of 12 starts for 271k, including 1 of 5 turf starts for 41k; this colt is a 1/2 to G2 stakes placed Atomic Rain (3-14, 291k, no turf starts); Maldonado has won with 5 of 12 (42%) mounts for this barn in 2014.
Drysdale
Sire wins with approximately 14% of his first-time starters and with approximately 15% of his turf starters, and this is the first foal to race from a minor stakes placed dam who won once from five starts for 39k, including 0-for-1 over turf; he has a turf leaning pedigree and like the outside post for him at this trip. - Brian Pochman

Race 3

Julio's Gold
Hard hitting filly will give the level another shot after holding on to score down the hill last month; she's had time to get over the effort and has run quite well over the local main track as well; her game is speed and from the inside draw her hand will be forced from the bell which could pose her some trouble as this field is loaded with early lick; she'll have to earn this one every step of the way.
Chippette
Makes her first start for a new outfit after shipping here off the beaten chalk pace effort in Pennsylvania; she's shown solid early interest but also possesses a tracking gear and maybe she's a little timid from the outset at this new venue which could allow her to fall into a pocket trip; worth a look.
Vicki Victoria
She's another who prefers to sit close early and now she'll step up in company while cutting back a panel; mare likes the local main track and she's given her all in each start under this outfit's care; working well, she's another who may be able to work out a favorable journey today; consider.
Rhodium
Drops in for a tag after failing to find enough late at the N1X allowance level on the cut back to this trip last time; gray has been working well for this and the class relief is noted, but her best game is speed and she may have her hands full trying to get to the top in this heat; expecting she'll be vulnerable late.
Small Moves
Gray drops to claimers after tiring off the hot splits she set in her return from the brief freshening; she likes the top and her drill earlier in the week suggests there won't be any change in tactics, so she'll probably be sent hard from the bell which won't make it easy for her to stay late in the lane; pace factor.
Time for Angie
Sophomore tries older for the initial time after being given a little extra time off the odds on regression at a bit longer trip early last month; she looks to have the right style given the heat's pace scenario and that makes her a threat, but she's run just one race that's fast enough to win this and the barn's numbers off this type of break are very poor.
Milady Maid
She's been away from the races for a year and a half and now she'll make her first start over the local dirt; barn has had a pretty nice year from limited starters and this gal is working quite well of late at Los Al for her return; note that the figures she ran in her 2 dirt scores did come during her juvenile year and she has a right to show up much faster today; faces a tough task, but proven fresh, she can't be completely overlooked. - Steve Grabowski

Race 5

Jaycee's Faith
Inside again but at least she got a feel of the surface; 1 for 6 dam earned nearly 12 grand; lone half bro Rule by Faith took 6 of 18, earned $35K; clean break and it could be a whole new ballgame.
Warren's Tricia R.
Homebred must be given look on the drop alone; 2 for 4 dam earned almost $50K; 2 of 3 siblings won; top kin Warrens Heartthrob, took 4 of 18, earned nearly $45K; if she can run at all, she figures to show it here.
Bea's Bench
Benchmark about 14% with debuters in a 510-horse study; sire graduated in third start; was a multiple Grade 2 winner; 1 for 3 dam banked $40K; this is her first to race; works are very well spaced.
Doris Johnson
Lucky J. H. 2 for 19 with firsters; sire won at 2, took a Grade 3, banked nearly $650K; stakes winning 5 for 17 dam earned $265K; 3 of 4 siblings won; 2 banked 6 figures including near $170K earner Maybe Tuesday; trainer does a nice job spotting stock with limited starters.
Ryderroo
Two regressions since she felt the wrath of the stewards; wide in last pair, has every right to be around the wire.
Desert Madam
Desert Code 1 for 14 with firsters; sire won at 2, took multiple Grade 3s and BC Turf Sprint, banked over a million; SP 2 for 15 dam banked over $130K; 2 of 3 siblings won including Yodelady O, who took 5 of 35, earned over $200K; stablemate's drills a bit quicker of late.
Charissa
Off slow in bow before stalking to no avail; she has trained steadily for this; SP 6 for 30 dam earned over $100K; 2 of 3 siblings won; top kin Azadi won 2 of 19, earned almost $90K; Bejarano sticks.
Fly to Freedom
She showed some talent but it was back in the day; she had to be off for a pretty serious reason; 3rd and 4th finishers in last took MSW events next out; try to get a good look at her on the track.
Grab the Mike
Tribal Rule about 14% with debuters in a 378-runner grid; sire graduated as older horse, took 2 of 4, banked nearly $80K; 2 for 5 dam banked nearly 15 grand; one sibling lost 4 times; the other, Grasp, took 2 of 48, earned over $100K; may need softer to shine. - Brian Mulligan

Race 6

Bird In Love (GB)
Like what she did in her career debut sprinting down the hill and she might be ready to give a good account of herself while going route-to-sprint for her second start back from a layoff; she's a full to Birdlover (3-13, 172k, including 2 of 10 turf starts for 161k).
Afternoon Wedding
Sire wins with approximately 11% of his turf starters and dam won 2 of 10 starts for 57k, including 0-for-2 over turf; runner up from latest won next out at GG on 4/20 going 5 1/2f vs. MSW rivals with a 62 Beyer.
Miss Super Quick
Her most recent start was much improved and it's worth noting that was her first start for this barn; if her latest workout is any indication, then she might be ready to come right back with another sharp start; Stevens has won with 4 of 11 (36%) mounts for this outfit at the current stand.
English Annie
Sire wins with approximately 8% of his first-time starters and with approximately 16% of his turf starters, and this is the first foal from a multiple stakes winning dam who won 15 of 34 starts for 520k, including 14 of 26 turf starts for 489k; firster has pedigree appeal, but maybe she'll be looking for more distance down the road.
Burning Arch
Sire wins with approximately 11% of his first-time starters and with approximately 14% of his turf starters, and stakes placed dam won 2 of 13 starts for 96k, including 0-for-1 over turf; 440k purchase has sharp works, a top pilot, and shows up for a strong first-out operation.
Force of Passion
Sire wins with approximately 13% of his first-time starters and with approximately 13% of his turf starters, and stakes placed dam won 4 of 18 starts for 189k, including 0-for-1 over turf; this filly is a 1/2 to multiple graded stakes winner Pontchatrain (6-8, 444k, including 5 of 6 turf starts for 396k).
Daylight's Coming
Sire wins with approximately 15% of his turf starters and this is the first foal from a dam who won once from seven starts for 47k, including one of six turf starts for 46k; stakes tested filly adds blinkers for her turf debut and her pedigree gives her a license to turf.
Broadway Bella
Sire wins with approximately 16% of his turf starters and dam was winless from four starts, including 0-for-2 over turf; this filly is a full to Southern English (2-2, 15k over turf); she showed some early interest in her career debut and she's by a top turf sire.
Humming Beethoven
The long layoff is an obvious concern, but she didn't run poorly in her career debut sprinting over turf, and that was as a 2-year-old; Baze does get his share of live calls from this outfit.
Nero's Pleasure
Sire wins with approximately 12% of his turf starters and dam won 6 of 53 starts for 71k, including 2 of 14 turf starts for 24k; this miss is a 1/2 to G1 winner Burning Roma (13-36, $1.5 million, including 3 of 8 turf starts for 239k) and multiple stakes placed Be Envied (2-12, 135k over turf); third finisher from debut won next out at Dmr on 9/4 going 1m over turf vs. MSW rivals with a 73 Beyer.
Not too Shiny
Her belated career debut was an encouraging performance and this filly is a 1/2 to multiple group stakes winner overseas, Duff (9-59, 676k); Nakatani has won with 3 of 8 (38%) mounts for this barn in 2014; must consider. - Brian Pochman

Race 7

Peacenik
Try to catch me; figures to have The Cleaners chasing him from the gate; races for more than 3 times the claim price; exits a best-last race Beyer speed figure when making the lead over a track that favors frontrunners; he's won his last 3 starts on fast-race tracks and looked like he was back to his best game in his 2nd start off the January purchase; try to catch me.
Shame On Alex
Finished a tiring 3rd in this same spot at longer more than one year ago; dull form since his last-SA dirt start 3 back; the 2-back turf try represents a career-best Beyer so maybe wants the green again; projects as part of the Peacenik-The Cleaners hot-pace battle.
Too Fast to Pass
Mixed reviews in 3 races off the December claim but a great sign that the win rider reunites for this; likely bounced in last 2nd time back following the 57-day layoff however today is race 3 in 51 days; the 3-back winner repeated in a SA-32K claimer with an 89 Beyer.
Life a Riley
Would have to rally against the speed bias to upset here; 0-for-3 on fast dirt while facing a field with 19 fast-main track wins combined; he is the only runner not to have won on the main track; the addition of blinkers for last produced an improved Beyer but he was outfinished; the 2-back SA dirt start saw him no match for the winner who won his next pair in SA-alw. and optional-claiming company with 99-97 Beyers.
Los Bambinos
Steps up in price 1st off the claim a 1-for-11 trainer angle since 2013; the 3-back winner repeated in an SA-OPC with a 99 Beyer; always like when the rider stays 1st off the claim; gets a good setup with Peacenik-The Cleaners going early; he will be charging late into a hot pace. .
Close to the Edge
On the bench since his neck loss to Los Bambinos and the winner who repeated with a 99 Beyer; clearly wasn't the improvement needed to score 1st off the claim but ran well in defeat behind a sharp winner; his field-best Beyer speed figure was accomplished on a synthetic surface; winless drought 2012 was his last win picture at Fairplex rallying at longer.
The Cleaners
Projects to battle Peacenik for the front trying to remain perfect on dirt; rating just hasn't been his game and the 2 times he made the front he scored; new rider comes with his highest-weight assignment ever; primed for this on turf and seems set for a good one 2nd time off the 8-week layoff. - Art Gropper

Race 8

Moone's My Name (GB)
The 95 Beyer Speed Figure she earned while taking home the top prize in a stakes in her latest start is the best last race figure in this field, and feel that she's eligible to come right back with another sharp run while making her third start of 2014; Espinoza has won with 8 of 29 (28%) mounts for this barn this year.
Parranda
East Coast invader carries a G3 winning credential with her and she commands plenty of respect in this spot while making her first start for the Hollendorfer barn; viewing the presence of Bejarano as a positvie indicator as he's won with 22 of 71 (31%) mounts for this barn in 2014.
Premier Steps (IRE)
She flashed ability in her first two starts in America, and really have to respect the way that she's taken her game to another level since moving into this barn; maybe it's worth noting the presence of Stevens aboard the other Proctor-trained miss in here, but feel that this stakes winning filly is in with a legitimate chance to secure her first graded stakes win.
Rhagori (GB)
She's done little wrong in her first two starts in America and she finished right behind today's rival Theatre Star in her most recent race; however, she is going to need to dial it up along the Beyer Speed Figure scale to prove to be the one in this spot.
Theatre Star
Can't ignore the way her form has improved since her second career start, and even though she's making her graded stakes debut today, she has to be considered a contender while showing up for a top turf barn with Stevens aboard; Stevens has won with 10 of 34 (29%) mounts for this barn in 2014.
Nickels Wild
She hasn't run poorly in her two starts against graded stakes competition but she is going to need to run the race of her life if she's planning on getting over on the top contenders in this spot; winner from latest won next out here on 4/13 going 1 1/4m over turf in a G3 with a 92 Beyer.
Journey On
Grade 3 stakes placed miss wasn't a match for one of today's key rivals in Moone's My Name in her most recent start, and she's another in here who will have to be ready to produce a career best performance to see her number posted on top after this one is run. - Brian Pochman

Race 9

Sofis Furia
Stormin Fever about 7% with debuters in a 448-runner sample; sire graduated at 2, won a G3, was G1 placed; dam was 0 for 7; 2 of 3 siblings won; top sib Truco took 2 of 13 earned about $30K; could need experience.
Mom's Winner
Cindago 6 for 40 with debuters; SW sire won 2nd start at 2, took 2 of 3 with a second, banked nearly $100K; dam was unraced; all 3 siblings won multiple times including a full sister and top earner Don't Rock Me took 3 of 17, banked about $55K; lean toward watching one.
Stracciatella
Not much to boost here; last race came back somewhat okay as 10th finisher took a maiden $5K seller at Penn National next out and 11th finisher beat maiden $3500 Los Al runners; can't endorse.
Lady Lois
Grey Memo 4 for 47 with debuters; sire won thrice at 2, banked over $1.7 million in long career; 2 for 29 dam earned over $60K; lone full sis Lady Liz took 1 of 12, banked less than a grand a start; in for $19K more than purchase price.
Swan Street Lady
Took pretty good action but then walked out of the gate; dam was unraced; 3 of 4 siblings won; top kin Trac N Jam took a stakes, won 3 of 27, earned about $160K; in light, must hurry.
Cleverly Beverly
Homebred cuts back, but she's had his chances; a full bro did win twice; she doesn't seem to hook any monsters and is long, long overdue.
Shared Image
Best race by far was the maiden claiming debut; stakes winning 2 for 9 dam banked nearly $60K; all 4 siblings won including Truckin, who took 10 of 38, banked about $75K; respect barn but can't push.
My Wish Come True
Pushed wide from marooned slot, look for better effort here; show horse in the debut graduated next out at this level, then was crushed in an N2L claimer; dam was unraced; 2 of 4 siblings won, each won once; got a feeling we have not seen the best of this one.
West Coast Storm
Hung wide in educational debut; place horse in last cashed next out in a maiden $30K seller, then was third beaten over 5 in a $40K starter; dam was 0 for 6; both siblings won including Mahogany Ridge, a full bro who won 7 times, banked about $80K; like the series of drills of late.
Ten in Excess
This is a tough sell after 3 dull efforts; 1 for 3 dam earned over $40K; lone half bro Johannesbourbon was stakes placed, took 4 of 12, earned nearly $70K; passing.
Doheny
Surf Cat 1 for 23 with debuters; sire didn't race at 2, won multiple Grade 2s, banked over a million; dam was unraced; all 3 siblings won including 4 for 40 over $70K earner Sir Stephen; at least she got a feel of the surface.
Georgia's Niece
Improved a bit but she didn't scare anybody; drawn right, but she has had her chances; would be careful here. - Brian Mulligan
