Santa Anita carryover reaches $128,402

Steve Andersen|Mar 15, 2003

ARCADIA, Calif. - A string of upsets on Saturday on a wet-fast track and a yielding turf course has led to a carryover of $128,402 for Sunday's nine-race program.

Sunday's program features the important $250,00 San Felipe Stakes, a prep for the Kentucky Derby. The San Felipe is part of the pick six, which includes the fourth through ninth races, all of which are run on the main track.

The course was listed as wet-fast late on Saturday program with further rain expected overnight.

The fourth race is a sprint over 6 1-2 furlongs for $10,500 to $12,500 claimers. Northern Crown, trained by Nick Hines, is the 3-1 favorite and breaks from the outside post.

The San Felipe is the fifth race. Domestic Dispute, the winner of the Santa Catalina Stakes in January, is the 2-1 favorite, but will face stern challenges from Atswhatimtalknbout (5-2), Man Among Men (3-1), Buddy Gil (12-1), and Siberland (15-1), to name four of the nine challengers. The San Felipe is run over 1 1-16 miles.

In the fifth race, jockey David Flores will ride Awesome Rush in a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old maidens. Skipping Stars, stakes-placed last year at Hollywood Park, has been scratched, leaving 12 entrants. Salt Wells, one of seven first-time starters in the field, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite.

There are no changes in the eighth race, a starter allowance over six furlongs. Reality Check, third at this level on Feb. 21, and Nogotahalo, the winner of a maiden claimer on Feb. 21, are the top contenders.

In the ninth race, there are four scratches ? Medinaceli, Sister Girl Blues, Bye Bye Birdie, and General Nancy.

Cunning Play, beaten a length in a similar race on Jan. 26, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite, but must beat Shining Strike, a frontrunning winner of a maiden race over 6 1-2 furlongs on Feb. 16.

There are no changes in the finale, a sprint over 5 1-2 furlongs for 3-year-old maiden fillies bred in California. Plus Three, second by a head on Feb. 17, will be a strong favorite.
