Santa Anita carryover now $123,739

Steve Andersen|Feb 03, 2007

ARCADIA, Calif. Saturdays program at Santa Anita, a 10-race card that features three consecutive stakes, will have a pick six carryover of $123,739.

No one hit the pick six on Friday, creating the carryover.

Saturdays pick six covers the fifth through 10th races, including the $100,000 Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds, the $75,000 Thunder Road Handicap on turf, and the $300,000 Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds. They are run as the seventh through ninth races.

The pick six begins with a large field of $10,000 claimers going six furlongs. There are three early scratches Epic Commander, Lower Shore, and Great Issue. As a result, Winning Hand has drawn in from the also-eligible list.

Lite Man is likely to be favored, but there will be support for Whata Soldier, who drew the rail.

The sixth race is a maiden race over about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course. Jimmys Quest, Southern Invasion, Seastate,, and Nationhood are scratched from the also-eligible list.

The field of 12 includes contenders The Big One, Own Roe ONeill, and Dontbeatattletale.

The Sham Stakes is run over 1 1/8 miles and is led by Liquidity, the runner-up in the Hollywood Futurity in December. Pirates Deputy, the California-bred champion 2-year-old male of 2006 and the sharp maiden winner Ravel are capable of winning.

The Thunder Road Handicap, the eighth race, will not include Porto Santo, who originally drew the rail. Charmo, second in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile last spring, is the 8-5 favorite on the morning-line.

The Strub Stakes could mark the end of a seven-race losing streak for Brother Derek, the winner of the Santa Anita Derby last April. He must beat Awesome Gem and Midnight Lute, the first two finishers of the San Fernando Breeders Cup Stakes in January.

The days final race is run over six furlongs for maidens. Beau Smoke has been withdrawn, leaving a field of 11. Jake La Gold and Beyond the Rim will head the betting.
