Santa Anita carryover hits $420,000

Steve Andersen|Feb 17, 2008

ARCADIA, Calif. - By the narrowest of noses, there is a two-day pick six carryover of $420,093 at Santa Anita on Sunday.

When Turbo Fan edged Turkish Victory in Saturday's 10th race, it marked the sixth consecutive race in which the favorite was beaten during Saturday's pick six sequence

Sunday's pick six covers the fifth through 10th races on a program that begins at 12:30 p.m.

The pick six includes three turf races, two of which are sprints on the hillside turf course, and three sprints on the main track, two of which are for maiden claimers.

The fifth race is a one-mile maiden race on turf for 3-year-olds. Come In Almighty, beaten a neck on Jan. 10, may go favored, but Art House, Great Siege, and Winning Yield are worth a look.

The sixth race is a sprint for maiden claimers. Sexy Soldier makes the all-important class drop from maiden special weight to maiden claimers. Danaell returns from a layoff of 22 months for a stable that does well with such horses.

The seventh race, a starter allowance on the hillside turf course, has nine starters. Swinger Doll will be tried in a sprint after finishing fourth against a similar field over a mile on Jan. 20. Justice Is Brief drops from a $50,000 claimer into the more restricted starter allowance class.

There are eight betting interests in the eighth race, a six-furlong sprint for $50,000 claimers. Brooker and Make Mine Vodka race as an entry. Make Mine Vodka was claimed for $32,000 in his last start on Nov. 23, the day he finished fourth and was beaten a neck.

The gritty Gray Black N White makes his 7-year-old debut in search of his third consecutive win for trainer Julio Canani.

The ninth race is the featured $75,000 Daytona Handicap on the hillside turf course. Defending champion Night Chapter will try to end a three-race losing streak against a solid field. Notional makes his turf debut. He was second in the Florida Derby in his most recent start last March.

Desert Code finished last of 14 in the Grade 1 Malibu. Moth Ball, who won the Morvich Handicap here in October 2006, will attempt to reverse a recent trend of poor results.

The final race is a maiden claimer for 3-year-old fillies. The favorite may be Stormy Taters, who was second in a maiden claimer at Golden Gate Fields on Jan. 11, the day she was claimed by Bob Hess Jr.

After the Storm takes a drop in class after a ninth in a maiden special weight last month. Topper's Treasure must improve from a third-place finish in a maiden claimer on Jan. 17.
