Santa Anita carryover at $117,725

Steve Andersen|Dec 31, 2005

ARCADIA, Calif. - The New Year begins with a pick six carryover of $117,725 at Santa Anita on Sunday.

The pick six covers the fourth through ninth races on Sunday's program, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Because of wet weather on Saturday, bettors are advised to check the late changes before finalizing selections. There is a possibility that the two turf races could be transferred to the main track and that the main track could be listed other than fast.

The fourth race is the $75,000 Blue Norther Stakes over a mile on turf for 3-year-old fillies. The race has drawn an oversubscribed field of 14 that will be limited to 12 starters. Seasons, a two-time winner from France, and Kitty Hawk, from Ireland, are making their U.S. debuts.

The fifth race is run over 6 1/2 furlongs for $14,000 to $16,000 claimers. There are 10 entrants, a group led by Nine to Midnight, Charming Eileen and Five o'Clock.

In the sixth race, there are 12 3-year-old state-breds entered for a maiden race over 6 1/2 furlongs. Field of Joy and Chosen Royalty have been withdrawn. Rocket Kitty, Purrfectly Fitting and Quarterly Report lead the field.

Excess Taxes is the likely favorite in the seventh race, an allowance race over 6 1/2 furlongs. Fresado will be ridden by Aaron Gryder, who recently returned to Southern California after a lengthy absence and rode the first two winners on Saturday's card.

The eighth race is the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap over 1 1/8 miles on turf. There are 10 entrants, including Badge of Silver trained by Bobby Frankel, the entry of Atlando and Don Incauto and Whilly, who has an excellent record on this turf course.

If the race is shifted to the dirt, the chances of Choctaw Nation will be greatly enhanced.

The final race is the a maiden claimer over six furlongs for 3-year-olds.
