Santa Anita: $101,743 pick-six carryover for Sunday’s card; no turf racing

Steve Andersen|Mar 27, 2011

ARCADIA, Calif. – Sunday’s pick six at Santa Anita begins with a carryover of $101,743, but the absence of turf racing caused by overnight rain has reduced the field of some pick-six races.

Three of the pick-six races were scheduled for the hillside turf course, which features a crossing on to the main track before the race joins the main portion of the turf course. In the event of rain, such races are often moved to the main track because of concern over footing on the crossing.

Sunday’s fourth, sixth, and eighth races have been moved to 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track.

The pick six covers the fourth through ninth races. The fourth race is due off at approximately 2 p.m., Pacific. Even with the scratches, the additional money bet into the pick six is likely to be $400,000 or greater. The sequence includes one stakes – the Santa Lucia Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles, the fifth race. Briecat is a strong favorite to win the Santa Lucia.

In the fourth race, a $50,000 claimer, Quietly Mine, Skyrush, and Cherokee Heaven have been withdrawn. Cherokee Heaven was the 5-2 favorite on the morning line, a role that will go to Sassou.

In the sixth race, Achak, Dance with Gable, El Merito, Atticus Jack, and Hughesy are scratched, leaving a field of seven in an evenly matched $32,000 claimer.

In the seventh race, an optional claimer over six furlongs, Rumor will not start, leaving a field of nine.

In the eighth race, Norvsky is withdrawn from an optional claimer, a race that has seven runners. Streakin’ Mohican and Earnednevergiven figure to dominate the betting.

As of mid-morning, there were no late changes for the ninth race, run over 5 1/2 furlongs for $12,500 claimers that have never won twice. Clue Me In, trained by Julio Canani, is the 5-2 favorite on the morning line.
