Sans Frontieres upsets Princess of Wales's

Alan Shuback|Jul 08, 2010

Sans Frontieres sprung a 14-1 surprise in the Group 2, $144,000 Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday. The lightly raced Jeremy Noseda-trained son of Galileo rallied from seventh to lead at the three-sixteenths pole, handing Khalid Abdullah's second-string 16-1 shot Redwood a 2 1/2-length defeat.

Out of a mare by Shirley Heights, Sans Frontieres is bred to stay at least the 1 1/2 miles of the Princess of Wales's. Sidelined for 11 months after finishing third to Black Bear Island in the Group 2 Dante Stakes last May, he was winning for the first time since his maiden debut in September 2008 at Lingfield Park. Ridden by Tom Queally, he had pacesetting Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes third Tazeez 4 3/4 lengths back in third, with Juddmonte's 11-8 favorite Spanish Moon fourth, another three-quarters of a length behind. Breeders' Cup Marathon winner Man of Iron weakened to finish last of eight as Sans Frontieres clocked the 12 furlongs in 2:30.34 on good to firm ground.

* Libranno put a couple of Royal Ascot hotshots in their place as the Richard Hannon trainee led throughout to take the Group 2, $106,000 July Stakes for juvenile colts and geldings by three quarters of a length from Godolphin's Neebras. From the first crop of the Danzig stallion Librettist, who won a pair of Group 1 miles in the Prix Jacques le Marois and the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, the 10-1 winner had gone wire-to-wire in his maiden debut on Newmarket's Rowley Mile Course. He found the July Course equally to his liking as he traveled the 6 furlongs under Ryan Moore in 1:11.37. Elzaam, a nose second in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes was third, 4 lengths behind, while Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Approve was 6.5 lengths fourth.
