San Souci Island wins first stakes

San Souci Island ($4.50) landed her first stakes in the $150,000 Carotene at Woodbine, a nine-furlong grass race for 3-year-old fillies.

Emma Wilson rode San Souci Island, who stalked along the inside most of the way, as Siwa set moderate fractions over a rain-soaked course labeled good. San Souci Island and Dance to My Tune both went by Siwa just past the eighth pole, and the former prevailed by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 1:54.42.

Siwa finished a distant third in the five-horse field of Ontario-breds.

"We had a nice trip inside," Wilson said. "The rail opened up in the lane, and we cruised on through. She was full of run when I needed her to be."

San Souci Island banked $90,000 for Windhaven and trainer Roger Attfield, who trained Canadian champion Carotene.
