San Felipe winner Forbidden Kingdom misses workout due to fever

Forbidden Kingdom, the winner of two Grade 2 races this year who is rated as one of the nation’s leading 3-year-olds, will not have a timed workout this weekend after he was diagnosed with an elevated temperature in recent days.
Forbidden Kingdom, scheduled to start in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 9, will have his next workout on the weekend of March 25-27, trainer Richard Mandella said on Saturday.
Forbidden Kingdom won the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 5. Mandella envisioned giving Forbidden Kingdom three workouts prior to the Santa Anita Derby, beginning this weekend, but the colt is now likely to have two.
“He’s had a lot of training,” Mandella said. “I don’t think this will be a problem. We can go forward from here.

“His blood is good. We’ll have to take it a day at a time.”
Saturday, Forbidden Kingdom was walked at the barn. Sunday, he is scheduled to be ridden under tack at the stable and could resume racetrack training on Monday, Mandella said.
“So far it looks very minor and not a big deal,” Mandella said. “Time will tell.”
Owned by the MyRacehorse syndicate and Spendthrift Farm, Forbidden Kingdom has won 3 of 5 starts and earned $434,000. In the San Felipe, Forbidden Kingdom led throughout as the even-money favorite, winning by 5 3/4 lengths.
