Sam Houston track report

Leaving on My Mind, named Texas-bred of the year in 2004, will make his 3-year-old debut Saturday night in the colts and geldings division of the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park. The other division of the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes, for fillies, is led by the Steve Asmussen-trained pair of Timber Jones and Tuned In.

Danny Pish trains Leaving on My Mind, who will break from post 8 in a field of eight on Saturday. Last year the colt won four stakes and earned $299,873. He has not raced since Dec. 4, when he finished seventh to Texcess in the $1 million Delta Jackpot at Delta Downs. Leaving on My Mind shows some nice woks for his return and will be ridden by Roman Chapa, who led the standings at Sam Houston going into the race week, even though he has been a regular at the Oaklawn meet in Hot Springs, Ark. Chapa has been on a stakes tear of late, and has won four of the first five stakes at Oaklawn.

The chief rival to Leaving on My Mind could be Truly Native, a half-brother to Native Annie, who was a stakes winner last week at Sam Houston. Robby Albarado has the mount for trainer Bernie Flint.

Both divisions will be run over one-mile.

* Michael Gill, the nation's leading owner the past two years, moved seven horses into Sam Houston with trainer Bret Calhoun last month, and so far the pairing has been a hit. Gill has won with 3 of his first 7 starters at the meet.
