Sales Tax wins All Brandy on DQ

Sales Tax got her first win in six starts this year in Saturday's $50,000 All Brandy Stakes at Laurel, but she needed the help of the stewards to get it.

Sales Tax, under Malcolm Franklin, was unable to get ahead of Ten Bolts after being pushed several lanes wide during a stretch-long duel in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for registered Maryland-bred fillies and mares. However, Ten Bolts, ridden by Travis Dunkelberger, was disqualified and placed second for interference.

Trained by Hamilton Smith, Sales Tax ($7.80) was five wide on both turns and moved to challenge Ten Bolts in midstretch after that rival made her bid for the lead near the three-sixteenths pole. Ten Bolts drifted out under left-hand whipping and prevailed by a half-length. Sales Tax finished 2 1/4 lengths in front of the favorite, Miss Lombardi.

Ten Bolts completed the 1 1/8 miles on a firm course in 1:51.08.

Sales Tax, a 3-year-old filly owned and bred by William Backer, improved her career record to 3 wins in 11 starts. It was her first victory since winning the Junior Championship at Monmouth in August 2007.
