Sainthood shows Penine Ridge potential in turf work

ELMONT, N.Y. – Sainthood, 11th in the Kentucky Derby, worked a half-mile in 49.09 seconds on the Belmont Park turf course Sunday morning. The work may have earned him a start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Pennine Ridge on turf here May 29.
“I thought he went very well on it,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He certainly worked good enough to put the Pennine Ridge in play.”

Prior to the Derby, Sainthood finished second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks over the synthetic surface at Turfway.
Meanwhile, Pletcher said he’s not sure what he will do next with Spice Is Nice, who won the Grade 3, $150,000 Allaire duPont Stakes last Friday at Pimlico.
Pletcher said the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on June 5 is probably too close back. A race like the Grade 3, $200,000 Shuvee on July 25 could be used as a stepping-stone to the Grade 1 Personal Ensign on Aug. 28.
