Saint-Cloud: Pour Moi captures Prix Greffulhe

Steve Andersen|May 07, 2011

Pour Moi ran past eight rivals in Saturday's Group 2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud in France to join the list of contenders for the Epsom Derby in England on June 4.

Pour Moi, ridden by Mickael Barzalona for trainer Andre Fabre, won by 1 1/2 lengths over 10-1 Bubble Chic, who finished clear of the 4-5 favorite, Vadamar, who was third through the straight. Pour Moi was sent off as 12-1 in the race over 1 1/4 miles.

After the race Fabre said he would speak with owners Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Michael Tabor about a potential trip to the Epsom Derby. Pour Moi, an Irish-bred colt by Montjeu, gave Fabre his fifth win in the Prix Greffulhe in the last six years.

* Dordogne, the winner of Saturday's Grade 3 Derby Trial at Lingfield racecourse, south of London, is unlikely for the Epsom Derby. He is not nominated to the English classic and is more likely to start at Royal Ascot in June, according to trainer Mark Johnston.

Dordogne, who won the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket in April, won the Derby Trial Stakes over 1 7/16 miles by a half-length over the Johnston-trained Hurricane Higgins. Dordogne led throughout to edge Hurricane Higgins, who drifted to his left in the stretch. Measuring Time, the 5-4 favorite in the field of six, finished third.

Dordogne, ridden by Neil Callan, was a 10-1 shot in the Derby Trial, his first start since a last-place finish in a field of nine in the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown on April 24.

* Crackerjack King, the 3-2 favorite, won Saturday's Group 2 Italian Derby over 1 3/8 miles at Capannelle after taking the lead with two furlongs remaining.

Ridden by Fabio Branca for trainer Stefano Botti, Crackerjack King followed eventual fourth-place finisher Sneak A Peek for the first six furlongs before taking the lead and holding off a threat from runner-up Cazals.

Crackerjack King, by Sharmadal, was a stakes winner at 2.
