SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Sadler's Joy used an eye-catching burst of speed to make up for an awful start in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga on Saturday, running by all six of his rivals in the final furlong of the 1 1/2-mile turf race to win by a half-length under Julien Leparoux. The victory was the first in a Grade 1 for owners Rene and Lauren Woolcott, who race as Woodslane Farm. Sadler's Joy is the second Grade 1 winner bred by the Woolcotts. They had previously bred four-time Grade 1 winner Tonalist, a winner of $3.6 million. The victory also was important for trainer Tom Albertrani, who is in the midst of a rebuilding year after splitting with owner West Point Thoroughbreds. Albertrani has won at least 30 races a year since 2005, but the Sword Dancer was only his 12th score of the season. "Yesterday was a huge victory for everybody," Albertrani said. "I've picked up a few new clients recently, but this is a reorganization year for our barn." Albertrani has steadily come up with Grade 1 winners throughout his career. A former assistant trainer for Bill Mott, Albertrani worked in Dubai for Godolphin from 1995 to 2003 before returning to the United States. Sadler's Joy is his eighth Grade 1 winner since 2004. Albertrani, 59, is most closely associated with Bernardini, the 3-year-old champion of 2006, with whom he won the Preakness, Travers, and Jockey Club Gold Cup. But he also has won Grade 1s with Twilight Eclipse, Better Lucky, Zo Impressive, Brilliant Speed, Gozzip Girl, Balletto, and now Sadler's Joy. "I was just saying to my wife last night how lucky we've been to have had all these good horses since we came back from Dubai," Albertrani said. Frank Conversation and Irish shipper Idaho set the table for Sadler's Joy's late rally by dueling on the lead, but he certainly cleaned up his plate in style. The final quarter-mile of the Sword Dancer went in a racehorse 22.68 seconds, and Sadler's Joy made up six lengths, according to the Equibase chart, translating to a 21-and-change finish for the 4-year-old son of Kitten's Joy. The Sword Dancer was a Win and You're In for the $4 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 4, and Sadler's Joy is guaranteed a fees-paid berth in the race. Albertrani is planning to use the Grade 1, $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park on Sept. 30 as a Breeders' Cup prep.
